What is a cad librarian?

A CAD Librarian is responsible for managing and maintaining libraries of CAD components, symbols, and models used in design and engineering projects. They ensure that CAD databases are accurate, up-to-date, and standardized to improve design efficiency. CAD Librarians work closely with engineers, designers, and manufacturers to create and organize digital assets for use in electronic or mechanical design. Their role often involves quality control, version management, and compliance with industry standards.

What does a cad librarian do?

A typical day for a CAD Librarian involves cataloging and maintaining digital CAD drawings and models, ensuring that files are organized according to company or industry standards. You may review submissions from engineers and designers, update metadata, manage permissions, and maintain version control. This role will partner closely with design engineering, manufacturing engineering, quality, metrology, and customer-facing teams to translate requirements into producible designs. The CAD Designer will also support rapid new product introduction activities by developing accurate, manufacturable design packages for prototype, tooling, and production applications.
What You'll Do...
  • Develop detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, and engineering drawings using industry-standard CAD software.
  • Design castings, tooling, fixtures, molds, and manufacturing aids for aerospace and industrial applications.
  • Create and maintain engineering documentation, including bills of material, drawings, and revision-controlled design packages.
  • Support Design for Manufacturing, Design for Additive Manufacturing, and Design for Casting reviews.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing and process engineering teams to optimize designs for production.
