Job description

Job Summary

KLJ is seeking an early to mid-level Environmental Specialist to support a variety of environmental projects across multiple sectors, including oil and gas, municipal, state and federal agencies, and tribal organizations. This role involves a combination of fieldwork, data collection, technical reporting, and environmental permitting. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, adaptable, and motivated to grow within a dynamic and collaborative team environment.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct environmental field surveys and site assessments in support of project needs
  • Assist with project scoping and development of environmental work plans
  • Prepare technical reports, documentation, and environmental deliverables
  • Support environmental permitting efforts at the local, state, and federal levels
  • Collect and document field data, ensuring accuracy and compliance with project requirements
  • Coordinate with internal teams and external clients to support project execution
  • Utilize GPS equipment and GIS software for data collection and mapping
  • Assist with environmental sampling activities, including soil, groundwater, and surface water, as needed
  • Support spill remediation projects as workload demands
  • Ensure compliance with applicable environmental regulations and company standards

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Biology, Ecology, or a related field
  • 2–5+ years of relevant environmental experience (internship experience considered)
  • Basic understanding of environmental fieldwork and data collection methods
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently in the field and collaboratively within a team
  • Willingness to travel and perform fieldwork in varying conditions
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with wetland delineations, land reclamation, and/or ecological surveys (botanical, wildlife, threatened and endangered species)
  • Knowledge of plant and wildlife identification specific to New Mexico and/or Texas
  • Familiarity with New Mexico and Texas environmental regulations and regulatory agencies
  • Experience using GPS units and GIS software
  • Experience writing technical reports and working with environmental data
  • Understanding of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
  • Experience collecting environmental samples in accordance with standard protocols

Hours and Travel

This position requires the individual occasionally work 40+ hours per week with 70% of the time spent in the office and 30% in the field. Willingness to travel on occasion may be expected.
