Job Title: CMT TechnicianJob Description

The CMT Technician conducts field and laboratory operations for construction materials testing, special inspections, and observations in accordance with ASTM, DOT, ACI, AWS, and IBC methods and standards. This role supports engineering staff by contributing to project execution and management through a solid understanding of engineering practices and construction methodologies as defined by applicable codes and specifications. The technician reads and interprets construction plans and specifications, performs detailed testing and analysis of construction materials, and prepares clear, accurate reports that support safe, compliant, and efficient construction projects.

Responsibilities
  • Perform field operations that include sampling, testing, special inspections, and observation of construction materials in accordance with ASTM, DOT, ACI, AWS, and IBC standards.
  • Conduct laboratory analysis and testing of construction materials using specified methods and standards to verify quality and compliance.
  • Read, interpret, and apply construction plans, drawings, and specifications to ensure that testing and inspections align with project requirements.
  • Assist engineering staff with project execution and management by providing accurate test results, observations, and technical support.
  • Document field and laboratory activities thoroughly, including test procedures, results, and observations, and prepare clear, well-organized reports.
  • Utilize technology and software tools to record data, organize information, and submit reports in a timely manner.
  • Communicate effectively with project teams, contractors, and engineering staff to relay findings, clarify requirements, and support problem-solving in the field.
  • Follow all applicable safety procedures and guidelines while working in the field and laboratory to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Navigate and work on uneven and difficult terrain, stand for extended periods, and handle physical tasks such as lifting up to 75 pounds during field operations.
  • Travel up to approximately 50% of the time, primarily within the Southeast region, with some assignments outside the state of Alabama.
  • Pursue and maintain required certifications (such as DOT, ACI, AWS) by completing training and successfully passing relevant examinations.
  • Support continuous improvement of testing and inspection processes by adhering to best practices and contributing feedback to engineering and laboratory teams.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in construction materials testing (CMT).
  • Demonstrated experience in construction materials testing, including concrete testing and materials testing in both field and laboratory settings.
  • Ability to perform inspections in accordance with DOT, ACI, AWS, and IBC standards.
  • Proficiency in reading and understanding construction plans, drawings, and specifications.
  • Strong understanding of engineering practice and construction methodologies as indicated by codes and specifications.
  • Ability to conduct laboratory analysis of construction materials following specified methods and standards.
  • Capability to work safely in field conditions, including walking on uneven terrain, standing for long periods, and lifting up to 75 pounds.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to approximately 50%, primarily within the Southeast region.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills to document findings and collaborate with project teams.
