Job description
Position Overview
The Business Relationship Manager II (BRM II) serves as an advanced strategic partner to University leaders and units with greater complexity, ambiguity, or institutional impact, building trusted relationships and aligning technology capabilities with evolving academic and business priorities.
The BRM II leads higher-value opportunity shaping, facilitates prioritization and roadmap development, and works across partners and IT teams to influence service evolution, value realization, and effective transition of work into execution.
This role operates with greater independence and judgment, coaches others in BRM-related practices, and contributes materially to the growth and maturity of Butler University's BRM practice.
Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership and Practice Development
- Help lead the continued development and refinement of Butler's BRM practice in partnership with BRM leadership.
- Strengthen the visibility, consistency, and effectiveness of BRM methods, tools, and outcomes across the organization.
- Lead or facilitate initiatives that explore emerging business and technology trends and assess their relevance to Butler.
Relationship Management and Collaboration
- Cultivate deep, trusted relationships with leaders and partner areas, including portfolios that are more complex, cross-functional, or institutionally significant.
- Teach, model, and reinforce effective relationship-building, facilitation, and advisory practices within IT and with willing partners.
- Facilitate value and impact conversations that help stakeholders articulate priorities, outcomes, and measures of success.
Opportunity Management, Roadmapping, and Change Advocacy
- Identify, shape, and prioritize emerging opportunities at the departmental and University levels, especially where ambiguity, interdependence, or organizational change is high.
- Work with partners and IT teams to develop and maintain strategic roadmaps that encourage adoption of existing capabilities and guide future investment decisions.
- Act as a change champion by helping partners recognize organizational change implications and engage appropriate change management approaches.
- Influence IT to grow new capabilities, refine services, or retire underused capabilities as business needs evolve.
Solution Planning and Execution Support
- Assist partners in evaluating solution options and navigating established selection processes.
- Work with business analysts, project sponsors, project managers, and IT staff to translate demand into effective requirements, plans, and recommendations aligned with University objectives.
- Monitor and document post-completion impact to support value realization and continuous improvement.
Coaching, Communication, and Continuous Learning
- Coach and mentor BRM I team members or peers, as assigned, by providing feedback on documentation, facilitation, and relationship practices.
- Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication and the ability to influence stakeholders without formal authority.
- Commit to continuous learning in BRM competencies, higher education trends, and broader market developments, applying insights to strategic decision-making.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in information technology, business, communications, leadership, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Typically requires 8+ years of progressively responsible professional experience with increasing scope, complexity, and influence.
- Demonstrated success building trusted relationships with leaders and stakeholders, facilitating cross-functional conversations, navigating ambiguity, and shaping work that advances organizational priorities and value.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently on complex opportunities, influence without formal authority, and translate institutional needs into roadmaps, plans, recommendations, or well-defined initiatives.
- Relevant experience may have been gained through formal business relationship management roles or through adjacent roles such as project management, program management, business analysis, consulting, client engagement, service delivery leadership, or similar work.
- Demonstrated success advising leaders, leading cross-functional initiatives, shaping priorities, navigating ambiguity, and translating business needs into actionable plans that deliver organizational value.
- Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships, influence without formal authority, facilitate complex discussions, and contribute to roadmap, demand, or portfolio decisions.
- Business Relationship Management Professional (BRMP), Project Management Professional (PMP), or another relevant industry-recognized credential required at hire or within 1 year of hire; ongoing BRM-focused professional development expected.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a relevant field.
- Experience in higher education or another complex, mission-driven organization.
- Experience mentoring others, facilitating roadmap or portfolio planning, or leading institutionally significant initiatives.
- Advanced or multiple relevant certifications such as CBRM, BRMP, PMP, PgMP, CBAP, Prosci, or comparable industry-recognized credentials that strengthen advisory, delivery, or change-leadership capability.
- Experience coaching others, leading cross-functional initiatives, facilitating roadmap or value discussions, or contributing to the development of a relationship management or partnering practice.
- Experience supporting change management and value realization across multiple stakeholder groups.
