Position Type: Full-Time
We are seeking a highly experienced Editor to support Army University Press (AUP) in editing, preparing, and publishing books and other scholarly products for digital and print distribution. This role provides manuscript editing, graphic review, publication layout, accessibility support, and final production services.
The ideal candidate possesses advanced editorial and desktop publishing expertise, exceptional attention to detail, and experience managing complex manuscripts through final publication while meeting demanding production and quality standards.
Responsibilities
  • Edit manuscripts for grammar, style, tone, format, factual documentation, citations, and endnotes
  • Apply AUP style requirements, Webster's New World College Dictionary, and The Chicago Manual of Style
  • Edit approximately 40-60 manuscript pages per workday while managing two works concurrently
  • Review and prepare drawings, maps, graphs, charts, photographs, and other illustrations for publication
  • Support cover design and verify image clarity, resolution, sourcing, and copyright status
  • Prepare and submit Cataloging in Publication applications and insert approved CIP data
  • Lay out manuscripts in Adobe InDesign, including front matter, body, covers, spine, pagination, and margins
  • Prepare accessible digital files, print-ready files, and final PDFs using approved delivery methods
  • Support weekly and monthly production reporting and Government coordination
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Arts in English or a bachelor's degree with an English concentration
  • Five to ten years of experience editing manuscripts and preparing documents for publication
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat Professional
  • Demonstrated expertise in copyediting, proofreading, typography, document layout, and publication quality control
  • Ability to meet high-volume production requirements while maintaining accuracy and managing concurrent assignments
  • Working knowledge of Section 508 accessibility requirements for electronic publications
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a favorable Tier 1 suitability determination
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience editing military, historical, academic, or Government publications
  • Experience developing maps, charts, illustrations, and print-ready publication files
  • Familiarity with Library of Congress CIP processes and DoD file-transfer procedures
  • Experience supporting Army University Press or a comparable publishing organization
