Central Utility Plant Operator – Ensure Reliability and Safety for Critical Infrastructure


Job Overview:

The Opportunity:

You will be responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the Central Utility Plant and its associated equipment across high-stakes environments. Supporting client sites throughout New Jersey and adjacent regional routes, you will drive operational continuity, lead preventive maintenance efforts, and safeguard continuous utility delivery for essential commercial, industrial, and federal facilities.


How You Will Make an Impact:

  • Continuously monitor Building Automation Systems (BAS) and Building Management Systems (BMS), assessing pressures, temperatures, BTUs, and critical system trends.
  • Investigate alarms and abnormal conditions, initiate and coordinate corrective action, verify resolution, and document findings.
  • Perform daily boiler water testing and chemistry checks to ensure proper treatment.
  • Inspect high-pressure boilers, burners, controls, Low Water Cut-Off (LWCO) devices, safety valves, and combustion conditions.
  • Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance and operational inspections on chillers, cooling towers, air compressors, feedwater pumps, deaerator tanks, and dealkalizers.
  • Monitor fire alarm initiating devices and supervisory signals, communicating issues per facility protocols.
  • Conduct routine plant rounds, record operating data, manage work orders, and maintain complete daily operating logs.
  • Enforce strict compliance with OSHA regulations, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, and facility safety standards.


Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • Valid driver's license.
  • 2 to 3 years of hands-on experience in high-pressure boiler plant or central utility plant operations.
  • Practical knowledge of steam/hot-water generation, chilled-water systems, water-treatment processes, pumps, and compressors.
  • Familiarity with BAS/BMS platforms, fire alarm panels, and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in boiler water testing, chemical treatment, and mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Strong computer literacy, including Microsoft Office suite and digital work-order systems.


Preferred Qualifications & Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Applicable New Jersey Boiler Operator License (Black Seal, Blue Seal, Red Seal, or Gold Seal).
  • Philadelphia Engineer license or equivalent regional certification.
  • Comprehensive background operating multi-craft utility infrastructure (boilers, chillers, cooling towers, deaerators).
