Job description

JOB SUMMARY:
Under the general direction of the Senior Director of Laboratory Services, and in collaboration with other members of the laboratory management team, the Blood Bank Supervisor oversees the daily administrative and technical operation of the Blood Bank and supervises a team of Medical Technologists. The Blood Bank Supervisor assists the Senior Director of Lab Services with any special projects, assists with lab issues in the absence of the senior director, and participates in continuous improvement projects.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
  • Full responsibility for the technical oversight of Transfusion Service functions.
  • Assures compliance with regulatory agencies including but not limited to JCAHO, CAP, OSHA, DPH, HCFA, American Association of Blood Banks, NCCLS, CLIA.
  • Is a member of the Transfusion Committee.
  • Works with and monitors performance of blood supplier and usage of blood supply.
  • Manages the Blood Bank budget and ensures that financial targets are met.
  • Generates or supervises the Internal Quality Assurance program.
  • Reviews Quality Control and CAP surveys.
  • Prepares recall notification information/letters for laboratory director.
  • Supervise a team of Medical Technologists: Orients, oversee, and performance manage staff; review technical and clerical work; conduct annual performance evaluations.
  • Monitors performance of Transfusion Service procedures for quality, reporting information, statistics, errors, incidents, accidents and audits to the appropriate Quality Assurance forums.
  • Participates in investigational studies within section under guidance of the laboratory director.
  • Acts as a technical resource for medical, nursing, and other staff.
  • Ensures adequate inventory of supplies and maintenance of equipment.
  • Maintains the donor database and serves as an authority on the Blood Bank computer system.
  • Performs all routine and special procedures in section.
  • Responds to and supervises testing of adverse reactions to blood products and consults with Transfusion Service physicians.
  • Reports to the Senior Director of Lab Services on significant personnel, technical and financial matters as well as any financial performance as needed.
  • Coordinates the Red Cross Blood drive at the Medical Center (4 times a year).
  • Generates, reviews, and completes Internal Quality Assurance forms when needed.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Job Requirements
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology or related science and 5 years of experience in an accredited blood center or transfusion service, of which 2 years must be in management; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (If none, please enter "N/A"):
  • 5 years of supervisory experience preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED (If none, please enter "N/A"):
  • MT ASCP, SBB ASCP or equivalent

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSAs) (If none, please enter "N/A"):
  • Interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to monitor, support and evaluate the performance of Transfusion Service staff, including conflict resolution.
  • Basic knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and flow-charting software.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to carry out complex procedures.
  • Knowledge of current scientific, regulatory and management skills applicable to a management position in a scientific discipline.
  • Capacity to analyze, to think creatively, to seek innovative alternatives and to harmonize dissent.
  • Strong organizational/troubleshooting skills required.

Compensation Range:
$80,500.00- $117,000.00
This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. This includes education, experience, skills, and certifications/licensures as they directly relate to position requirements; as well as business/organizational needs, internal equity, and market-competitiveness.
