To thrive as a Biotech Software Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science or software engineering, coupled with an understanding of biology, genetics, or related life sciences. Familiarity with programming languages such as Python or Java, experience using bioinformatics tools (like BLAST or Bioconductor), and, in some settings, knowledge of regulatory standards are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and the ability to work well in interdisciplinary teams distinguish top performers in this field. These skills are crucial for building reliable software solutions that support scientific discovery and innovation in biotechnology organizations.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior biotech software engineers with extensive experience, specialized skills in data analysis, machine learning, or bioinformatics, and often working in leadership roles or at large biotech firms can earn $500,000 or more annually. High compensation may also include bonuses, stock options, or profit sharing, especially in competitive or rapidly growing companies.

What are some typical projects or daily tasks for a Biotech Software Engineer?

As a Biotech Software Engineer, you'll often develop and maintain software tools for analyzing biological data, automate laboratory workflows, or create user-friendly interfaces for scientific researchers. Your daily tasks might include writing code, troubleshooting algorithms, reviewing scientific data, and collaborating closely with biologists, data scientists, and laboratory technicians. Depending on the company, you may be involved in developing cloud-based platforms, integrating new laboratory hardware, or ensuring software compliance with industry regulations. This dynamic and collaborative environment means your work directly impacts ongoing research and helps accelerate scientific discoveries in the biotech sector.

Will AI replace biotechnologists?

Biotech software engineers and biotechnologists perform complementary roles; AI can automate certain tasks like data analysis and modeling but is unlikely to fully replace the expertise, creativity, and decision-making skills required in biotechnology. Human oversight remains essential for experimental design, interpretation, and ethical considerations in the field.

What is a biotech software engineer?

About This Role:
We're looking for a Technical Lead / Full Stack Engineer to join Novir-someone who can own our technology end-to-end. This is not a pure management role, it is a take the bull by the horns, hands-on builder. You'll be the architect, the builder, and the force multiplier-designing scalable systems while staying close to the code and shipping quickly using modern development tools, including AI/agentic workflows.

You'll partner directly with leadership to translate business needs into technical solutions, define our architecture, and accelerate development velocity without sacrificing quality.

What You'll Do:
  • Own the technical vision and architecture across all Novir platforms, including core applications, integrations, and infrastructure
  • Act as a player-coach: write production code while guiding and leveling up other engineers and contributors
  • Leverage AI/agentic development tools to dramatically improve speed, efficiency, and code quality
  • Design and build scalable, secure APIs and systems that integrate with internal tools and third-party platforms
  • Partner closely with product, operations, and leadership to prioritize and execute against the roadmap
  • Translate ambiguous business needs into clean, pragmatic technical solutions
  • Lead development of internal tools including tracking systems, inventory systems, and operational platforms
  • Establish best practices across code quality, deployment, CI/CD, and system reliability
  • Evaluate and implement new technologies that create leverage and long-term advantages
Technical Stack & Capabilities:
  • Strong proficiency in JavaScript / TypeScript across the stack
  • Experience with Node.js and modern frontend frameworks (React preferred)
  • Solid understanding of cloud infrastructure (AWS - EC2, RDS, etc.)
  • Experience with Docker, distributed systems, and backend services (Redis, nginx, etc.)
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (GitHub, CircleCI, CodeDeploy)
  • Strong experience designing and building APIs and system integrations
  • Comfort working across the full stack: frontend, backend, and infrastructure
What We're Really Looking For:
  • A builder's mindset-someone who ships, iterates, and takes ownership
  • Ability to operate as both architect and hands-on engineer
  • Experience with patient tracking systems, EMRs/EHRs, lab integrations (HL7, FHIR, SFTP, API), and inventory logistics
  • Experience using (or strong interest in using) AI-assisted / agentic coding tools to accelerate development
  • Strong product intuition and ability to work directly with stakeholders and customers
  • Comfort operating in an ambiguous, fast-moving startup environment
  • Track record of building and scaling systems from the ground up
Experience:
  • 6+ years of engineering experience, with increasing ownership over systems and architecture
  • Prior experience in a lead, staff, or founding engineer role strongly preferred
  • Experience working closely with business stakeholders to define and deliver custom solutions
Who You Are:
  • You're an Innovator - You enjoy working with new technologies ranging from the frontend to backend, and are particularly passionate and an expert in multiple stacks
  • You're A Problem Solver - You have strong experience with various technologies, and know how to pick the right tool for any job
  • You're a Team Player - You love to collaborate closely with the team to brainstorm ideas, gather requirements, and review and improve code
  • You're Curious - You are naturally curious and have an interest in learning new things.
Perks of Working @ Novir:
  • Competitive total compensation offerings
  • Generous paid time off policy
  • Medical, dental and vision insurance, some of which is covered by the company
  • Company provided Disability and Life Insurance
  • A friendly office atmosphere in our office space in the heart of Milwaukee's Third Ward
  • Opportunity to build something incredible while being surrounded by intelligent, hardworking and motivated coworkers
Novir is a fast-growing startup with a work hard, play hard attitude. We look for smart, motivated individuals who are excited to build something incredible from the ground up!ย
We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans.
