Job Description

The Applications Engineer – PHL Mods owns the complete RFQ-to-order workflow for modernization projects across Syntegon's pharma liquid primary packaging portfolio, including vial washers, depyrogenation tunnels, aseptic filling systems, stoppering, capping, tray/ring loading, and RABS/isolator systems.

In this role, you will partner with aftermarket sales, engineering, and project management teams to clarify customer needs, assess existing equipment and site constraints, and develop robust technical proposals that encompass scope definition, pricing and options, lead time projections, risk assessments, and preliminary project plans for both in-plant phases (engineering, procurement, fabrication, assembly, programming, and FAT) and site installation in regulated cleanroom environments.

You will be responsible for presenting engineered solutions to customers, supporting seamless handover to Project Management at project kickoff, and remaining engaged throughout execution to address change orders and ensure scope clarity.

    Key responsibilities

    • Opportunity Management: Triaging and prioritizing RFQs while managing the full quote workflow, including pricing, risk assessment, and internal approvals.
    • Technical Scoping: Engaging customers directly to verify site constraints, define modernization scopes, and develop project plans for both in-plant and cleanroom installations.
    • Cross-Functional Coordination: Driving clarity across engineering, procurement, and manufacturing to build accurate proposal packages and hit tight deadlines.
    • Consultative Sales: Presenting value cases focused on ROI and operational impact, followed by supporting project handovers and post-award scope management.
    • Continuous Improvement: Utilizing SAP data and "lessons learned" from executed projects to refine estimating models and maintain high professional standards.
    Qualifications

    Basic Qualifications

    • Industry background in either:
      • Capital equipment manufacturing with exposure to service/mods/retrofits, or
      • Pharmaceutical fill/finish operations (parenteral preferred).
    • Demonstrated experience creating technical proposals/estimates for engineered solutions or projects.
    • Strong technical literacy: can read and interpret mechanical drawings, basic electrical schematics, and P understands cleanroom/aseptic constraints and utilities at a practical level.
    • High proficiency in Microsoft Excel (costing models, lookups, pivot tables); solid skills in Word, PowerPoint, and Teams.
    • Comfortable navigating ERP data; SAP familiarity is a plus and ability to learn it quickly is required.
    • Excellent communication and customer-facing presentation skills; consultative and credible with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
    • Willingness to travel ~5–10%.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software/Controls, or related field; or equivalent practical experience.
    • Hands-on background from design engineering or field service/commissioning on packaging equipment or pharmaceutical machinery.
    • Direct experience in parenteral fill/finish or pharma liquid primary packaging.
    • Working knowledge of cGMP/aseptic processing concepts; familiarity with standards such as Annex 1, GAMP 5, 21 CFR Part 11, and ISO 14644 is a plus.
    • Experience with 2D/3D and controls tools (e.g., AutoCAD for layouts, SolidWorks; exposure to PLC/HMI/electrical design).
    • SAP experience for BOMs/material masters/costing; comfort mining historical data to inform estimates.
    • German language skills are a plus.

    Additional Information

Compensation for roles at Syntegon varies depending on a wide array of non-discriminatory factors including but not limited to the specific office location, role, degree/credentials, relevant skill set, and level of relevant experience.
