What is bioscience technology?

Bioscience technology is a field that combines biology with technology to develop products and processes for healthcare, agriculture, environmental management, and other industries. Professionals in this area use laboratory techniques to analyze biological samples, conduct experiments, and assist in research and development. They often work with DNA, proteins, cells, and microorganisms to support scientific discoveries and innovations. Bioscience technologists play a key role in improving medical diagnostics, developing new medicines, and ensuring quality control in various biological products.

What is the difference between Bioscience Technology vs Laboratory Technician?

AspectBioscience TechnologyLaboratory Technician
Required CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Bioscience or related fieldAssociate's degree or certification in laboratory sciences
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, biotech companies, healthcare settingsHospitals, diagnostic labs, research facilities
Employer & Industry UsageBiotech firms, pharmaceutical companies, research institutionsMedical labs, hospitals, clinical research centers

Both Bioscience Technologists and Laboratory Technicians work in laboratory settings, often with overlapping skills. However, Bioscience Technologists typically have more advanced education and may handle more complex research tasks, while Laboratory Technicians focus on routine testing and sample processing. Understanding these differences helps job seekers identify the right career path in the bioscience industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Bioscience Technologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Bioscience Technologist, you need a solid understanding of biological sciences, laboratory procedures, and data analysis, typically supported by a degree or diploma in biotechnology or a related field. Familiarity with laboratory instruments, PCR, chromatography systems, and possibly certifications in laboratory safety are highly valuable. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you excel in both independent and team-based research environments. These skills and qualities are essential for ensuring accurate experimental results, maintaining safety standards, and advancing scientific research and innovation.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in bioscience technology labs?

Professionals in bioscience technology labs often encounter challenges such as maintaining strict adherence to safety protocols, managing the accuracy and calibration of sophisticated lab equipment, and troubleshooting experimental inconsistencies. They may also need to balance multiple research projects simultaneously while meeting tight deadlines. Additionally, collaboration with interdisciplinary teams requires effective communication skills to ensure that data and findings are shared and interpreted correctly.

IFF is a global leader in flavors, fragrances, food ingredients, and health & biosciences. We deliver sustainable innovations that elevate everyday products.
Health & Biosciences channels our passion for nature and bioscience into sustainable, life-enhancing technologies that power innovative solutions across healthcare, food, consumer, and industrial markets.
The Senior Engineer role can be based in the U.S. Health & Biosciences manufacturing sites such as Cedar Rapids, IA, Beloit, WI, or Madison, WI (on-site, with regional travel as required). Be part of an experienced, solution-oriented, strategic, and proactive team where together we can achieve greatness and make a real impact.

Where You'll Make a Difference
  • Lead regional engineering initiatives to improve energy efficiency, utilities performance, emissions reduction, and resource utilization across Health & Biosciences (H&B) Americas manufacturing sites
  • Own and execute the H&B Waste Valorization Program, converting waste streams into cost savings, avoided liabilities, or new value streams through reuse, recovery, or external partnerships
  • Serve as a regional Manufacturing Technology (MT) technical resource and subject-matter expert for utilities systems, energy usage, waste streams, and process integration
  • Deliver projects end-to-end, including business case development, Front-End Loading (FEL), execution, startup, and sustainability of results
  • Partner closely with Site Engineering, Capital Projects, Operations, Operations Excellence, Corporate Sustainability, and Global Manufacturing Technology teams to prioritize and execute initiatives
  • Identify, evaluate, and deploy new technologies and external solutions that enhance manufacturing performance, resilience, and sustainability
  • Support standardization, best-practice sharing, and technical knowledge transfer across the Americas and global H&B manufacturing network
  • Quantify and communicate delivered value, including profitability improvement, cost avoidance, emissions reduction, and operational risk mitigation

What Makes You the Right Fit
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline
  • 10+ years of experience in manufacturing, process engineering, utilities, or industrial operations
  • Strong technical background in utilities systems, energy management, process engineering, and/or waste and water systems
  • Proven experience leading capital projects or complex technical initiatives from concept through implementation
  • Ability to operate effectively in a regional, matrixed organization supporting multiple manufacturing sites
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project execution capabilities
  • Clear and effective communication skills with the ability to influence across functions and levels

How Would You Stand Out?
  • Experience leading sustainability, energy efficiency, emissions reduction, or waste valorization initiatives
  • Exposure to fermentation, bioprocessing, or complex chemical manufacturing environments
  • Experience in regional or multi-site engineering leadership roles

Why Choose Us?
  • Opportunity to drive measurable sustainability and cost impact at scale
  • Exposure to diverse technologies and a broad manufacturing footprint
  • Collaborative, purpose-driven engineering culture
  • Strong connection to global sustainability and innovation priorities
  • Career growth through high-visibility regional initiatives
  • Work that contributes to safer, more efficient, and more sustainable manufacturing
