How much do bioprocess engineer jobs pay per year?
What is bioprocess engineering?
A bioprocess engineer uses biological materials to create a variety of products. As a bioprocess engineer, you apply your biology and chemistry skills to create foods, products used in the agriculture industry, biofuels, pharmaceuticals, and water filtration systems, among other products. Qualifications for this career depend on the specific duties of a job, but you should obtain at least a bachelor’s degree in biology or chemistry. Most bioprocess engineers go on to pursue a graduate degree as well. You also need experience in a laboratory setting. The biotechnology field is growing quickly, so an entry-level engineer job in the field is perfect for those looking to pursue this a career in this industry.

Job description
The actual location of this job is in Bend, Oregon (USA). Relocation assistance is available for eligible candidates and their families, if needed.
This is a fully site-based role. Working together in person supports close, real-time collaboration and the technical precision needed to manufacture medicines to the highest quality and safety standards.
Today, Lonza is a global leader in life sciences operating across five continents. While we work in science, there's no magic formula to how we do it. Our greatest scientific solution is talented people working together, devising ideas that help businesses to help people. In exchange, we let our people own their careers. Their ideas, big and small, genuinely improve the world. And that's the kind of work we want to be part of.
We are seeking an early-career bioprocess engineer with hands-on experience in laboratory-scale protein purification to join our growing R&D team focused on accelerating high-impact innovations in biologics manufacturing. This role will specialize in downstream process development while contributing flexibly to other technical areas across bioprocessing workflows as project needs evolve.
You will be responsible for both executing experiments, communicating results, as well as contribute to basic biologics laboratory management.
What you will get:
- A dynamic and innovative work environment where you can drive impactful research and technology development.
- Opportunities for professional growth through collaboration, mentorship, and hands-on project involvement.
- An inclusive and ethical workplace.
- Compensation programs that recognize high performance.
- Medical, dental and vision insurance.
- The full list of our global benefits can be also found on https://www.lonza.com/careers/benefits.
What you will do:
Design and execute laboratory-scale downstream processing experiments involving chromatography, filtration, harvest clarification, and ultrafiltration/diafiltration.
Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot bioprocessing equipment and associated control systems.
Develop scalable, high-throughput, or automated experimental workflows that generate high-quality, reproducible process data.
Apply engineering principles to evaluate process performance, solve practical problems, and guide iterative experimental design.
Contribute flexibly across adjacent technical areas, including cell culture, bioreactor operation, automation, and analytical assays.
Communicate results clearly and contribute effectively within fast-paced, multidisciplinary teams.
What we are looking for:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Bioprocess Engineering, or a related field.
2-4 years of relevant hands-on experience in downstream processing, protein purification, or bioprocess development.
Experience with downstream unit operations such as chromatography, filtration, harvest clarification, or ultrafiltration/diafiltration.
Experience designing chromatography experiments and operating AKTA systems is preferred.
Strong engineering fundamentals as applied to bioseparations unit operations.
Strong quantitative problem-solving, data-analysis, and experimental-design skills.
Mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting and maintaining laboratory equipment.
Experience with mammalian cell culture, bioreactors, automation, programming, or assay development is a plus.
Every day, Lonza's products and services have a positive impact on millions of people. For us, this is not only a great privilege, but also a great responsibility. How we achieve our business results is just as important as the achievements themselves. At Lonza, we respect and protect our people and our environment.
