Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) Virtual Primary Care is seeking an innovative and patient-centered Registered Nurse to serve in a unique role embedded on a university campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This position bridges the gap between in-person student outreach and virtual care delivery, supporting BILH's mission to make high-quality primary care accessible to the university community.
The nurse operates as an outreach, facilitation, and care coordination resource, working in close partnership with BILH Virtual Primary Care providers who conduct all clinical assessments and decision-making through telehealth visits. This hybrid site will not function as a traditional clinical care site but will provide point of care testing to augment virtual visits. The university is providing dedicated quiet space rooms equipped with computers and video capabilities to support private, high-quality virtual visits for enrolled students.

Job Description:

Key Responsibilities 

Patient Registration & Panel Enrollment 

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for students seeking to enroll as patients in BILH Virtual Primary Care. 

  • Guide students through the registration and enrollment process, ensuring accurate demographic, insurance, and contact information is captured. 

  • Actively promote primary care empanelment, helping students understand the value of establishing an ongoing relationship with a Virtual Primary Care provider for longitudinal health management. 

  • Assist with scheduling initial and follow-up virtual appointments with Virtual Primary Care providers. 

Pre-Visit Support & Care Facilitation 

  • Obtain and document vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate) prior to virtual provider visits to support clinical assessment. 

  • Compile and verify current medication lists, including prescription medications, over-the-counter products, vitamins, and supplements, as directed by Virtual Primary Care providers. 

  • Collect relevant patient history information to streamline the virtual visit and optimize provider efficiency. 

  • Support students in accessing and connecting to virtual visit platforms  

  • Troubleshoot basic technical issues related to virtual visit connectivity and escalate as needed. 

  • Advises patients when in person care is needed as instructed by a provider 

Point-of-Care Testing 

  • Perform point-of-care testing (POCT) only as specifically directed and ordered by BILH Virtual Primary Care providers. 

  • Accurately document POCT results and communicate findings to the ordering provider in a timely manner. 

  • Adhere to all BILH policies and procedures for POCT quality control, documentation, and specimen handling. 

  • Maintain and move POCT equipment as well as supplies in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and BILH protocols. 

  • Communicates laboratory and diagnostic test results as instructed by providers. 

Health Education & Prevention 

  • Develop and deliver culturally responsive health education programming tailored to the university student population, including topics such as preventive care, sexual health, mental health awareness, nutrition, substance use, and chronic disease management. 

  • Host informational events and outreach activities on campus to raise awareness of BILH Virtual Primary Care services and promote enrollment. 

  • Provide individual health coaching and education during student interactions, reinforcing provider recommendations and supporting health behavior change. 

  • Collaborate with university health and wellness departments, student counseling services, and campus organizations to align programming and cross-promote resources. 

  • Distribute and maintain health education materials in campus spaces. 

Coordination & Communication 

  • Serve as a consistent, trusted liaison between enrolled students and the BILH Virtual Primary Care team. 

  • Communicate effectively and in a timely manner with virtual providers regarding student needs, pre-visit assessments, and follow-up care requirements. 

  • Facilitate referrals to other BILH services, specialty care, mental health resources, and community supports as directed by providers to support student navigation 

  • Completes various patient forms such as insurance, school and camp, and work forms. 

  • Participate in regular team huddles and care team meetings with Virtual Primary Care staff. 

  • Maintain accurate and complete documentation in the electronic health record (EHR) in accordance with BILH standards. 

  • Triages patient/family phone calls and portal messages providing advice and support. 

Compliance & Professional Standards 

  • Practice within the scope of licensure as defined by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing and BILH policies. 

  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality and comply with all HIPAA regulations. 

  • Adhere to all BILH infection control, safety, and clinical quality standards. 

  • Complete all required BILH training, competency assessments, and annual mandatory education. 

  • OSHA EXPOSURE: Job involves possible exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues. 

Qualifications 

Required 

  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. 

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required. 

  • Minimum 5 years of nursing experience 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (American Heart Association). 

  • Demonstrated experience with electronic health record systems. 

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage a diverse college-age population. 

  • Comfort with telehealth and virtual care technology platforms. 

  • Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to work independently with sound clinical judgment, managing a dynamic outreach environment without direct onsite supervision. 

  • Ability to move patient care equipment. Ability to lift, move, position patients 

Preferred 

  • Experience in ambulatory care, urgent or emergency care. 

  • Experience in college or university health settings. 

  • Experience in community health, population health, or health promotion and education. 

  • Familiarity with virtual care or telehealth delivery models. 

  • Bilingual or multilingual communication skills. 

  • Certified in POCT (point-of-care testing) competency or willingness to obtain upon hire. 

Work Environment & Physical Requirements 

This position operates in a non-clinical university campus environment. The nurse will work across shared campus spaces, quiet room facilities, and student common areas. There are no dedicated clinical exam rooms at this site.   The nurse must be comfortable working in an open, community-oriented setting while maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality standards.  

Physical requirements include the ability to stand and walk for extended periods, perform vital signs and point-of-care testing, transport light educational materials and supplies across campus. Regular use of computers and video conferencing technology is required.

Pay Range:

$32.24 - $55.86

The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.  Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
