Title: Bicycle Mechanic

Reports to: Bike Mechanic Supervisor

Location: Philadelphia, PA

Job Type: Full-time, Non-exempt, 32 hours per week, 4 days per week (Tuesday-Friday 8:30am-5:00pm)

Philadelphiaโ€™s bike share program, Indego, launched in 2015 and has grown to 250 stations and 2500 bikes (electric and classic), and is nationally recognized as one of the most equitable bike share programs in the country. Coordinating growth within the communities we seek to serve is fundamental to how we operate andโ€ฏthe Indego system is set to more than double in scale in the coming years. We are currently looking for a dedicated Bicycle Mechanic to join our team!

The Bicycle Mechanic position is responsible for assisting in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of the Indego bike share fleet. Reporting to the Bike Mechanic Supervisor, the Mechanic will complete safety inspections and repairs on bicycles in the shop and the field, as well as assist with battery swapping, bike assembly, and other operational work as needed. This position will require riding a cargo bike loaded with equipment and navigating the city safely by bicycle. This position will entail outdoor work with high exposure to the public and potentially inclement weather. Bike shop experience is preferred, and urban riding experience is a must. Mechanics will receive full training on the specific maintenance requirements of the bicycles; however, experience working in mechanically and technically minded environments is required. Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work under the guidance of the Bike Mechanic Supervisor & Bike Shop Manager.โ€ฏ
  • Become an expert on all working aspects of bike share fleet.โ€ฏ
  • Perform safety checks and repairs in the field and shop.โ€ฏโ€ฏ
  • Repair bikes as needed to company specifications.โ€ฏ
  • Diagnose E-bikeโ€ฏissues via diagnostic software tool.
  • Manage inventory of parts and tools both in shop and on cargo bike.
  • Prioritize field repairs based on complexity and demand, diagnose issues in field when necessary.
  • Perform basic repairs and maintenance on cargo bikes when necessary.
  • Handle public interactions in the field in a friendly and professional manner
  • Communicate bike and non-bike related issues to dispatch.โ€ฏ
  • Will requireโ€ฏa combination of days in the bike shop and fieldwork.
  • Must diligently maintain accurate service records for all repairs completed.โ€ฏ
  • Other duties as assigned.โ€ฏ

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • Bicycle mechanic experienceโ€ฏpreferred.โ€ฏโ€ฏ
  • Experience cycling in an urban environment, in all weather conditions, required.
  • Proven technical and mechanical aptitude, innovation and critical thinking.โ€ฏ
  • Ability to repair E-Bike specific issues.โ€ฏ
  • Ability to repair basic bicycle electronics.โ€ฏ
  • Ability to manage repair schedule.โ€ฏ
  • Proficiency with computers and ability to learn new software.
  • Highly organized.โ€ฏ
  • Excitement, interest in bike share, and sense of humor a must.โ€ฏ

Physical Requirements and Special Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Must work outdoors in various temperatures including rain, cold and heat conditions.โ€ฏ
  • Must be able to ride a cargo bicycle confidently and safely in an urban environment.โ€ฏ
  • Must be willing to work in the field at least 2 days per week.
  • Must complete repairs in the field, incorporating use of portable stand when necessary.
  • Requires frequent and repetitive bending, stooping,โ€ฏliftingโ€ฏup to 65 pounds.โ€ฏ
  • May require warehouse and light office work when necessary.โ€ฏโ€ฏ
  • This is a full-time position working under a Reduced Workweek expected to work 32 hours per week (4 days per week, 8 hours per day). Some hours outside of this, including nights and weekends, may be required.
