What is bench work?

Bench work refers to tasks performed at a workbench, typically involving the manual assembly, fabrication, repair, or testing of small parts or products. It is common in fields like electronics, jewelry making, watch repair, and laboratory sciences. Bench work often requires precision, attention to detail, and the use of hand tools or small machinery. Workers may inspect components, assemble items, or conduct experiments, depending on the industry. The environment is usually controlled and organized to facilitate accuracy and efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in bench work roles?

To thrive in a Bench Work role, you need strong manual dexterity, attention to detail, and foundational knowledge of laboratory or mechanical processes, often supported by a relevant technical diploma or on-the-job training. Familiarity with tools such as calipers, micrometers, hand tools, and potentially laboratory equipment is important, along with adherence to safety protocols. Precision, patience, and problem-solving skills are key soft skills that set top performers apart in these positions. These abilities ensure high-quality, accurate results and efficient workflow in settings that demand meticulous craftsmanship or experimental reliability.

What are some typical challenges faced in a bench work role, and how can they be effectively managed?

Professionals in bench work roles often encounter challenges such as maintaining precision during repetitive tasks, managing multiple experiments or projects simultaneously, and ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols. To effectively manage these challenges, it's important to develop strong organizational skills, use standardized procedures, and communicate regularly with team members about workflow and safety updates. Many teams also encourage ongoing skill development and cross-training to help employees adapt to new techniques or equipment, which can make the work both engaging and supportive for career growth.

Job description

Jewelry Repair Bench Jeweler

Location: Marco Island, FL (On-Site)

Target Start Date: October 5th

Schedule: Monday – Friday (5-day work week; seasonal Saturday hours)

Housing & Relocation Perk: Private apartment accommodation on Marco Island is available for commuting jewelers for up to the first 4 to 6 months to make transition easier (e.g., traveling in from Miami/Fort Lauderdale/East Coast FL) or relocation assistance options to be discussed upon initial phone consultation.

About Kathein Jewelers

Kathein Family Jewelers has been in business 46 years and in Marco Island for 13 years. We offer a unique retail experience: an upscale, luxury showroom paired with an exceptionally warm, laid-back, family-owned atmosphere where clients and staff feel right at home.

Following the retirement of our long-tenured 4th-generation bench jeweler, we are seeking a seasoned, highly skilled Bench Jeweler to manage our on-site bench operations.

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Bench Jeweler who takes immense pride in traditional craftsmanship. You will handle daily customer repairs, store inventory modifications, diamond and stone setting, and metal fabrication. This is an ideal position for a skilled artisan looking for a stable, high-end environment with zero corporate red tape, reasonable hours, and supportive shop owners.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Core Bench Operations: Melt gold, roll plates and wire, perform clean solder joints, ring resizings, chain/bracelet repairs, shank replacements, and retipping.
  • Stone Setting: Perform precise diamond and gemstone setting across various styles (prong, bezel, channel, pave, and flush).
  • Restoration & Modifications: Modify existing jewelry (e.g., converting earrings, altering mountings) and restore heirloom pieces with meticulous care.
  • Precious Metals & Gemstones: Work expertly with 14k/18k gold (yellow, white, rose), platinum, sterling silver, diamonds, and precious colored gemstones.
  • Quality Control & Bench Safety: Inspect finished pieces under magnification to ensure structural integrity and flawless polish before customer delivery; maintain clean bench machinery and tools.
  • Trial Bench Period: Willingness to participate in a paid 1- to 2-day on-site bench test to ensure a great mutual fit for skills and shop culture.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience Level:  5+ years of hands-on bench jeweler experience (seasoned professional required; not an entry-level/apprentice position).
  • Technical Mastery: Demonstrated proficiency in melting gold, rolling plate/wire, laser welding/soldering, stone setting, and metal finishing.
  • Pride in Craftsmanship: High attention to detail, strong hand-eye coordination, and respect for both high-value inventory and sentimental customer repairs.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable working independently at the bench while collaborating closely with our store owners and staff.

Schedule & Perks

  • Schedule: Standard 5-day work week (Monday–Friday). (Expanded 6-day holiday hours during peak December -February season only).
  • Work-Life Balance: Store is completely closed during the month of September for annual staff recess.
  • Commuter/Housing Assistance: Flexible arrangements available, including potential access to an on-island apartment for jewelers commuting from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, or surrounding regional hubs.
