What is a behavioral health secretary?

Behavioral Health Secretaries are administrative professionals who support mental health clinics, hospitals, or counseling centers. They handle tasks such as scheduling appointments, managing patient records, answering phones, and assisting behavioral health staff with clerical duties. Their role is essential in ensuring that the facility runs smoothly, so that clinicians and patients can focus on care and treatment. Behavioral Health Secretaries often serve as the first point of contact for patients and must maintain confidentiality and compassion in all interactions.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a behavioral health secretary?

Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, scheduling software, and HIPAA compliance is typically required. Excellent communication, discretion, and empathy help in managing sensitive patient information and supporting a multidisciplinary team. These skills ensure efficient office operations, patient confidentiality, and a supportive environment for both staff and clients.
