What is a Backend Full Stack Engineer?

A Backend Full Stack Engineer is a software developer who specializes in building and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and APIs of an application, while also having proficiency in front-end technologies. They are capable of working on both the backend and frontend parts of web applications, allowing them to develop end-to-end features and ensure seamless integration between the client and server sides. This role requires strong knowledge of programming languages such as JavaScript (Node.js), Python, or Java, as well as familiarity with databases, server architectures, and various web frameworks. Backend Full Stack Engineers often collaborate with designers, frontend developers, and other stakeholders to deliver complete and functional products.

How does a Backend Full Stack Engineer typically collaborate with frontend developers and other team members?

Backend Full Stack Engineers frequently work alongside frontend developers, product managers, and QA engineers to deliver seamless user experiences. They are responsible for building and maintaining server-side logic and APIs, ensuring data flows efficiently between the backend and frontend. Effective communication is essential, as they must align backend functionality with frontend requirements and participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and troubleshooting sessions. This collaborative environment fosters learning and often provides opportunities to contribute across the tech stack, enhancing both technical and interpersonal skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Backend Full Stack Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Backend Full Stack Engineer, you need strong proficiency in server-side languages (such as Node.js, Python, or Java), database management, and a solid understanding of front-end technologies, usually supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with frameworks (like Express, Django, or Spring), version control systems (like Git), and cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure) is typically required. Effective problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help you collaborate across disciplines and deliver robust solutions. These skills ensure scalable, maintainable applications and seamless integration between backend and frontend systems, which are critical for organizational success.

Job description

Senior Full-Stack Engineer

Plymouth, MN (On-Site) 40 hrs/week | Start: Immediate

The Opportunity

The SaaSpocalypse is real. Salesforce, Workday, ServiceNow, and Epic are all feeling it. The per-seat, legacy-workflow model is being dismantled in real time and the companies that built their moats around it are scrambling. We are not.

Think Harvey for legal, Sierra for customer service, Ramp for finance - vertical AI companies built from the ground up to displace the incumbents, not compete with them on features. We are that company for healthcare.

EWINGS, INC. is a 24-year-old firm with active Fortune 500 clients, battle-tested delivery workflows, and deep regulatory domain expertise that most software companies will never acquire. We are now converting that institutional knowledge into an AI-native operational platform purpose-built for enterprise health plans - one of the most complex, high-stakes segments in the entire enterprise software market ripe for disruption.

This is not a seat-license play. This is not a dashboard bolted onto a legacy workflow. This is vertical AI infrastructure, built AI-first from the ground up, with human-in-the-loop design at its core and agentic workflows surfacing as clear, actionable intelligence for enterprise operators. The incumbents in this space are slow, expensive, point solutions incapable of moving at AI speed. We are not.

We are well-capitalized, operationally stable, and already generating revenue. Live client pilots are underway. The platform is real, the clients are real, and the urgency is real.

You Don't Have to Move to San Francisco for This

For two decades, the most compelling platform opportunities - the ones where you build something that matters, with people who know what they are doing, with real clients and real stakes - have been concentrated on the coasts. The AI wave has made that worse, not better.

This one is in Plymouth, MN.

If you have been watching the AI wave build from the Midwest and waiting for something real to land close to home - a vertical AI platform with Fortune 500 clients, live pilots, domain depth that startups cannot fake, and a founding team that has been executing at the highest level for over two decades - this is it.

The engineers who get in early at companies like this do not look back.

Who You'll Be Working With

Most AI startups are being built by first-time founders who are learning management, sales, domain expertise, and product strategy in real time - at your expense. The pressure is real, the learning curve is steep, and the failure rate reflects it.

This is not that.

The founder and CEO leading this platform brings 24 years of executive operational, sales, and market development experience inside Fortune 500 healthcare - including UnitedHealth Group, Optum, HealthNet, Ascension, and the VA Community Care Network. This is not someone learning healthcare. This is someone who built it.

The broader team matches the ambition. Our operational and delivery leadership includes people who have sat in the same seats as our clients - direct experience inside the nation's largest health plans. That team is complemented by engineers and builders with backgrounds at industry-defining companies like Google and Amazon. You will be working with people who have built at scale before and know what that requires.

The Culture

A lot of companies say they are "AI-forward." Most of them mean they added a ChatGPT integration and declared victory. The engineers who join those teams spend the next two years watching leadership catch up to where the market already was.

We are not debating anything.

At EWINGS, learning and leveraging AI every single day is the starting point, not an aspiration. Every person on this team is expected to use AI tools actively and fluently - not because we asked them to, but because that is the only way to move at the speed this market requires.

The window of pre-adoption in this market is open right now. Our competitors are still holding meetings about whether to adopt. We are already building. That gap closes fast and the engineers who are inside it when it closes are the ones who define what the platform becomes.

What you will find here is a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment with genuine enthusiasm for what we are building, clear ownership of meaningful work, and leadership that has been doing this long enough to know what good looks like.

If that is the kind of environment that energizes you, you will fit in immediately.

About the Role

We are hiring a senior full-stack engineer to build and scale the AI-native operational platform at the core of what EWINGS is delivering to enterprise health plan operators. This is an execution-heavy role in a fast-paced environment with tight timelines and high quality expectations. You will ship production features end-to-end, own integrations, and help strengthen the platform foundation as we expand capabilities.

This role is on-site full-time in Plymouth, MN in a Class A office environment. Experience working within HIPAA-compliant or otherwise regulated healthcare environments is a meaningful plus.

Responsibilities

  • Build and ship core platform features across the full stack, from UI to APIs to data layer
  • Design and implement scalable workflows supporting healthcare operations and enterprise users
  • Develop secure role-based access controls and authorization patterns across the application
  • Create platform-wide search and data discovery experiences with filtering, permissions, and performance in mind
  • Implement auditability and traceability features, including activity logging, admin tooling, and export functions
  • Integrate third-party services using REST, OAuth, and webhooks, including document and identity-related services
  • Improve platform reliability through strong error handling, observability, and performance tuning
  • Collaborate in daily standups, participate in code reviews, and contribute to pragmatic technical decisions
  • Write clean, production-ready TypeScript with maintainable patterns and strong test coverage where appropriate
  • Leverage AI coding tools actively and fluently as a core part of your daily development workflow. This is not optional - it is how we work.

Required Skills

  • Active, daily use of AI-assisted development tools - Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude, or equivalent. Non-negotiable.
  • 5+ years of full-stack development experience delivering production SaaS products
  • Expert-level proficiency with modern React-based frontends, including server-side rendering patterns
  • Strong Node.js and TypeScript development experience
  • PostgreSQL expertise, including row-level security or equivalent access control approaches
  • Experience integrating third-party APIs including REST, OAuth, and webhooks
  • Proven track record delivering under tight deadlines with high quality standards
  • Ability to work on-site full-time in Plymouth, MN. Required. No exceptions.

Preferred Skills

  • E-signature API integration experience such as DocuSign or similar
  • Experience with cloud-native backend-as-a-service platforms covering auth, database, storage, and serverless functions
  • Enterprise SaaS experience, including admin tooling and multi-tenant patterns
  • Healthcare domain experience - platforms, clinical workflows, or regulated environments
  • HIPAA compliance familiarity or experience building in regulated data environments

Tech Environment

Our stack is built on a modern React-based frontend with server-side rendering, TypeScript throughout the application, PostgreSQL with role-based access controls, and a cloud-native deployment model. We favor clean architecture, strong type safety, and production-grade observability. Specific tooling details are shared during the interview process.
