Are back end web developers still in demand?

Back end web developers are currently in high demand due to the ongoing need for server-side programming, database management, and API development across various industries. Skills in languages like Python, Java, and frameworks such as Node.js remain valuable, and demand is expected to grow with increasing reliance on web applications and cloud services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a back end web developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Back End Web Developer, you need strong proficiency in server-side programming languages (such as Python, Java, or Node.js), database management, and API design, typically supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with frameworks (like Django, Express, or Spring), version control systems (such as Git), and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS or Azure) is essential. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with front-end developers and troubleshoot complex issues. These skills ensure robust, scalable, and secure web applications that meet user and business requirements.

How much do back-end web developers make?

Back-end web developers typically earn a median annual salary ranging from $70,000 to $120,000, depending on experience, location, and skill set. Developers with expertise in languages like Python, Java, or PHP and experience with databases and server management tend to earn higher salaries.

What is a back end web developer?

A back end web developer deals with the server side of a web app or software. They usually create the application programming interface that the front-end developers use to design the apps. As a back end web developer, your duties are to ensure that the data moves seamlessly from the server to the end user and to create the back-end databases that contain user and app data. You work closely with the front-end development team to test both parts of the project for performance and usability.

What are some common challenges back end web developers face when working on large-scale projects?

Back End Web Developers working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges such as maintaining code scalability, managing complex databases, and ensuring system security. Coordinating with front-end teams to align APIs and data structures can also be complex, requiring effective communication and documentation. Folia Health

Boston, MA โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Retirement

Re-posted 9 days ago

Job description

Intro to Folia
Measure what matters.
Nell and Dan founded Folia Health because it has been simply too hard for their family members to receive personalized, data-driven healthcare that directly addresses the issues they're dealing with. People around the country and now the world, including our own team members and families, use Folia to track what they're experiencing - fatigue, symptom flares, pain - alongside what they're currently doing for treatment, and then use this information to understand the best way forward. Most Folia users also receive Data Dividends to share their data as part of our Research Programs, the business model that keeps Folia humming along.
Along the journey of building Folia, we've developed and validated a new type of health data - home-reported outcomes (or HROs). HROs allow people dealing with complex conditions to digitize their vast personal health knowledge, with simple responses to a personalized set of multiple-choice questions whenever they're experiencing a change in their health. HROs are actually now a valued part of the research methods that leading life sciences companies use to understand how their therapies are impacting people in the real world.
Folia ('foglia' is leaf in Italian) was named for the power of the individual contributions of people tracking their own health experiences. Each individual contributor is a leaf on the tree, performing important tasks to enable the whole (healthcare) tree to grow and become stronger - ultimately benefitting the leaf itself. (Yes we may have taken the metaphor too far...)
We are:
  • Female-founded and led by parents and family caregivers
  • Stubbornly focused on making healthcare make sense
  • 10 years in business
  • Backed by top venture funds with a strong financial runway
  • Made possible by our fast-growing user community with thousands of users in rare conditions

We are a small and highly collaborative engineering team supporting a large number of projects and initiatives. As such, new engineers on our team will contribute to development efforts across our stack, including development of back-end web services, web and native mobile clients, and data processing tools using SQL. Engineers on our team also collaborate with product specialists and other stakeholders to refine designs and project plans to ensure the company's goals are met.
This position is a great fit for developers who are enthusiastic about working with a variety of technologies, and who can learn and apply new skills quickly. If you are excited about building software that makes a real difference in the lives of its users, while rapidly leveling up as an engineer, you will be a great fit!
Our Technologies
  • PHP, Laravel, MySQL (back end)
  • Swift (native iOS)
  • Kotlin (native Android)
  • Javascript (web)

Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience in software development
  • Experience with one or more modern programming languages
  • Ability to design effective domain models
  • Background in object oriented design patterns
  • Experience with RESTful web services

What You Will Do:
  • Develop Folia's core model for recording and analyzing personal health data
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of web services for consumption by our client applications
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of features for our front-end applications (web and mobile)
  • Rapidly scale your skills and role within the company as we scale our organization

Environment
We currently have an office in Boston, MA and our team works remote and in-person based on their individual preference.
Compensation
  • Starting salary range of 110k - 150k depending on experience
  • Significant stock options
  • Benefits including health insurance, dental, vision, and long term disability insurance, and 401(k)
  • We are interested in every qualified candidate who is eligible to work in the United States. However, we are not able to sponsor visas.
