What is the difference between Azure Virtual Desktop vs Cloud Systems Engineer?

AspectAzure Virtual DesktopCloud Systems Engineer

Azure Virtual Desktop focuses on deploying and managing virtual desktops in the cloud, primarily for remote work. Cloud Systems Engineers design and maintain broader cloud infrastructure solutions. While both roles involve cloud technology, Azure Virtual Desktop specialists concentrate on virtual desktop environments, whereas Cloud Systems Engineers handle overall cloud architecture and systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Azure Virtual Desktop specialist?

To thrive as an Azure Virtual Desktop Specialist, you need a solid understanding of virtualization, cloud computing, networking, and Microsoft Azure services, often supported by relevant certifications like Microsoft Certified: Azure Virtual Desktop Specialty. Familiarity with Azure Portal, PowerShell scripting, Active Directory, and management tools such as Azure Monitor is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and a proactive approach to troubleshooting set top performers apart. These skills ensure secure, efficient, and user-friendly virtual desktop solutions that meet organizational needs.

What are some common challenges faced by Azure Virtual Desktop administrators, and how can they be addressed?

Azure Virtual Desktop administrators often encounter challenges such as optimizing user experience, managing resource scaling, and ensuring secure access. Balancing performance and cost requires careful monitoring and proactive scaling to accommodate fluctuating user demand. Security is another priority, with administrators needing to configure multi-factor authentication and role-based access controls. Regularly reviewing Microsoft updates and best practices can help address these challenges and ensure a smooth, secure virtual desktop environment.

What is an Azure Virtual Desktop?

Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) is a cloud-based service from Microsoft that allows users to virtualize Windows desktops and applications. It enables organizations to provide secure remote access to desktops and apps from anywhere, using any device. AVD is scalable, supports multi-session Windows 10/11 experiences, and simplifies management by running everything on Microsoft Azure. It's commonly used for remote work, secure app delivery, and centralized IT management.

As a Systems Administrator III at Kapitus, you will serve as a senior-level technical resource responsible for architecting, implementing, securing, and supporting critical infrastructure within a fast-paced fintech environment. You will own complex systems across cloud, on-premises, and hybrid platforms, while ensuring the highest standards of availability, security, and compliance required of a financial technology organization. This role blends deep technical expertise with strategic thinking - you are expected to lead by example, mentor junior team members, and drive continuous improvement across our ecosystem.
What you will do:
  • Serve as the escalation point ("buck stops here") for complex infrastructure issues from the helpdesk L1/L2 support teams.
  • Design, implement, and maintain secure, highly available infrastructure across private, public, and hybrid cloud environments, with a primary focus on Microsoft Azure.
  • Lead architecture and deployment of IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS solutions aligned with fintech regulatory and compliance requirements (SOC 2, PCI-DSS, SOX).
  • Administer and harden Windows Server environments, Active Directory (on-prem and Azure AD), and Microsoft 365 services including Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive.
  • Manage endpoint security, Mobile Device Management (MDM) via Microsoft Intune/Endpoint Manager, JAMF and enforce Zero Trust security principles.
  • Implement and maintain Identity and Access Management (IAM) controls, including Azure AD Conditional Access, Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), and Single Sign-On (SSO) integrations.
  • Partner with network infrastructure assisting with firewalls, Cisco Meraki switches, and access points - ensuring segmentation and security best practices.
  • Assist in developing and maintain infrastructure-as-code (IaC) using tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or PowerShell DSC to drive automation and reduce manual toil.
  • Administer and support virtualization platforms including VMware vSphere and Citrix Virtual Desktops on Azure.
  • Manage cloud-based backup and disaster recovery solutions; own RTO/RPO objectives and conduct regular DR testing.
  • Monitor, analyze, and optimize system performance, capacity, and security posture across all infrastructure components.
  • Collaborate with Information Security to maintain compliance with fintech regulatory frameworks and internal security policies.
  • Evaluate and recommend emerging technologies to improve operational efficiency, reduce cost, and strengthen security.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, runbooks, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior systems administrators and helpdesk staff.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams including Engineering, Security, and Compliance to support business-critical initiatives.
  • Coordinate with managed service and outsourcing partners to ensure SLA adherence and compliance obligations are met.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

What we're looking for:
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum 5+ years of progressive systems administration experience, with at least 2 years in a senior or L3 capacity.
  • Experience in a fintech, financial services, or similarly regulated industry strongly preferred.
  • Deep expertise in Microsoft Azure, including Azure Virtual Machines, Azure Networking, Azure AD, and Azure Security Center.
  • Mastery of Microsoft 365 administration: Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Microsoft 365 Groups architecture.
  • Strong experience with Active Directory and Azure Active Directory, including Group Policy, RBAC, and Conditional Access Policies.
  • Proficiency with virtualization technologies including VMware vSphere and Citrix Virtual Desktops on Azure.
  • Hands-on experience with network technologies: firewalls, Cisco Meraki, DHCP, DNS, VPN, and network segmentation.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, Ansible, Puppet) and scripting languages (PowerShell, Python, Bash).
  • Familiarity with compliance frameworks relevant to fintech: PCI-DSS, SOC 2 Type II, SOX IT General Controls.
  • Experience with cloud-based backup solutions and disaster recovery planning.
  • Knowledge of Zero Trust security architecture principles and implementation.
  • Experience with SIEM tools, endpoint detection and response (EDR), and vulnerability management platforms.
  • Familiarity with ITSM platforms (e.g., ServiceNow, Jira Service Management) and ITIL best practices.
  • Experience with Salesforce administration fundamentals is a plus.
  • Ability to write scripts and leverage APIs to automate workflows and integrate systems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to clearly convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive, ownership-driven mindset.
