Departmental Overview

The College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) is a dynamic, innovative new college at UC Berkeley that represents a once-in-a-generation transformation. The College brings together faculty, researchers, staff, and students from computing, statistics, the humanities, and social and natural sciences, mirroring the cross-cutting nature of data science and redefining the
research university for the digital age. Core to the College is a commitment to examining how the digital revolution affects equity and opportunity-and building the capacity to respond to these challenges.

CDSS was created to meet the opportunities and demands of a world where data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence inform practice and policy in virtually every arena. The College connects the Data Science Undergraduate Studies program, Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences, Department of Statistics, the Berkeley Institute for Data Science, Computational Precision Health, and the Center for Computational Biology.

The College is responsible for growing Berkeley's broad-based programs in data science, computing, statistics, and other interdisciplinary programs, including classes and programs serving thousands of undergraduate students a year.

The AV Systems Operations Specialist supports the daily operation, reliability, sustainment, and ongoing enhancement of audiovisual (AV), unified communications (UC), and production technology systems across instructional, collaboration, and event spaces within CDSS.

Reporting to the Director of Facilities and Capital Projects, this role supports the operational execution and sustainment of enterprise AV, UC, hybrid collaboration, and production technology initiatives across the organization.

This position combines hands-on AV/UC operational support, systems troubleshooting, technical coordination, documentation development, workflow improvement, and cross-functional collaboration. The Specialist helps maintain a stable, scalable, and supportable AV ecosystem while contributing operational and technical input toward evolving initiatives involving Zoom Rooms, AV-over-IP systems, hybrid collaboration technologies, livestreaming workflows, and emerging production environments.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily on-site position supporting active instructional, collaboration, and event spaces.
  • Occasional evening or weekend work during major events, deployments, or maintenance windows.
  • Ability to move AV equipment up to approximately 40 lbs and access equipment racks, ceilings, and service spaces.

The ideal candidate is a strong technical generalist who is comfortable operating across AV systems support, enterprise collaboration technologies, operational workflows, production support, and evolving technology initiatives within a fast-paced academic environment.

35% AV & Unified Communications Operations:

  • Provide Tier 2/3 operational and technical support for classrooms, lecture halls, conference rooms, and event spaces.

Troubleshoot and support issues involving:

  • Crestron-controlled environments
  • DM-NVX and AV-over-IP systems
  • Zoom Rooms
  • PTZ camera systems
  • DSP platforms (Q-SYS)
  • Wireless microphone and audio systems
  • Displays and switching infrastructure
  • UC hardware platforms (Logitech)
  • Serve as an escalation resource for frontline support teams, student workers, and operational support staff.

Monitor and maintain AV and UC system health using platforms such as:

Maintain and troubleshoot Crestron-based AV systems, including:

  • Touch panels
  • Room scheduling systems
  • Control system integrations
  • Collaboration workflows


Collaborate with AV engineering teams, vendors, and integrators on:

  • System upgrades
  • Technology rollouts
  • Operational testing
  • Deployment readiness

Assist with implementation and operational support for enhancements such as:

  • Collab compute integrations
  • One Beyond

  • Hybrid meeting workflows

10% Production & Streaming Support:

  • Support livestreaming, hybrid events, recordings, lectures, and high-visibility campus events.

Operate and maintain production-related systems, including:

  • Switchers
  • Encoders
  • PTZ camera systems
  • Audio interfaces
  • Lighting systems
  • Streaming infrastructure

Assist with operational support for evolving production workflows involving:

  • NDI and Vizrt ecosystems
  • Hybrid production environments
  • Lecture capture platforms
  • Provide light post-production support, including media exports, clipping, audio cleanup, and file preparation.
  • Coordinate room and production setups for special events, presentations, and executive-facing activities.

10% Training, Documentation & Knowledge Transfer:

  • Develop scalable training and enablement materials for faculty, staff, and support teams, including quick-start guides, onboarding materials, knowledge base articles, and short training content.
  • Support train-the-trainer and knowledge transfer sessions for support teams and departmental stakeholders.
  • Assist users with varying technical backgrounds while promoting consistent room usage and operational best practices.

5% Other Task Assigned

Required Qualifications
  • 4+ years of experience supporting enterprise AV, UC, classroom technology, or production technology environments.
  • Strong operational troubleshooting experience with Crestron ecosystems, Zoom Rooms, AV-over-IP systems, DSP platforms (Q-SYS), PTZ camera systems, and enterprise collaboration
    technologies.
  • Experience supporting livestreaming, hybrid collaboration, or production workflows.
  • Experience creating technical documentation, SOPs, and operational processes.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and stakeholder-support skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in fast-paced operational environments.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills with the ability to adapt to evolving operational needs.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
  • CTS certification or equivalent industry certification.
  • Experience supporting higher education, enterprise collaboration, or large-scale AV environments.

Anticipated hiring range: $33.57/hr - $45.38/hr
UCB salary range: $33.57/hr - $59.72/hr
The salary offer to the final candidate will take into consideration their experience and salary equity with current UC Berkeley employees working in similar roles.
