What is an AV coordinator?

AV Coordinators, or Audio Visual Coordinators, are professionals responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining audio and visual equipment for events, presentations, or meetings. They work closely with event organizers, technical teams, and venue staff to ensure all AV needs are met, including sound systems, projectors, video conferencing, and lighting. AV Coordinators also troubleshoot technical issues and may train users on how to operate equipment. Their goal is to ensure a smooth and effective multimedia experience for all participants.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AV coordinator, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AV Coordinator, you need a strong understanding of audio-visual technology, event coordination, and troubleshooting, usually supported by experience or education in AV or related fields. Familiarity with AV equipment, video conferencing platforms, and control systems, as well as certifications like CTS (Certified Technology Specialist), are commonly required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and organizational skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies are vital for ensuring seamless event execution, minimizing technical issues, and delivering high-quality AV experiences.

What are some common challenges faced by an AV coordinator, and how can they be managed effectively?

AV Coordinators often face challenges such as managing last-minute changes to event requirements, troubleshooting technical issues under time pressure, and coordinating multiple vendors or team members. Effective communication, strong organizational skills, and a proactive approach to planning are essential for success in this role. Building a detailed checklist, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of AV equipment, and fostering strong relationships with venue staff and clients can help an AV Coordinator handle these challenges smoothly.

Job description

About the Role
The AV Installation Technician is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys building, installing, organizing, and problem-solving in real project environments.
This position supports the preparation and installation of audiovisual systems for themed entertainment, attractions, exhibits, immersive environments, and other creative spaces. The work may take place in our office, warehouse, active construction sites, completed venues, or project locations worldwide.
The right person for this role takes pride in clean, organized work. You do not need to know everything on day one, but you do need to be reliable, focused, comfortable working with tools and equipment, and willing to learn.
This is a role for someone who can move between warehouse preparation, job-site installation, equipment logistics, and team support as projects require.
What You'll Do
You will help prepare, build, install, and support AV systems from our warehouse to the job site. This may include building and dressing AV racks, installing equipment, terminating and testing cables, labeling components, preparing shipments, and making sure equipment is organized and ready for installation.
On site, you will assist with the physical installation of AV equipment such as speakers, projectors, displays, LED walls, racks, cabling, and related hardware. You will pull, route, label, and terminate low-voltage cabling in a clean and organized way, while helping ensure the finished installation is safe, serviceable, and aligned with company and client standards.
You will support system setup, connection checks, testing, and troubleshooting under the direction of our AV Engineers. This includes helping identify wiring issues, equipment concerns, installation challenges, or anything that could affect system performance or quality.
You may also assist with procurement and logistics, including ordering equipment or materials, tracking deliveries, preparing shipments, and coordinating equipment movement to job sites.
Because our projects move quickly, communication, organization, and follow-through matter. You will work closely with team members, project leads, and other trades to keep work moving, communicate progress, ask questions when needed, and take ownership of assigned tasks through completion.
Requirements
What We're Looking For
We are looking for someone with real hands-on ability, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to keep learning. Just as important, we need someone who shows up prepared, takes direction well, asks thoughtful questions, follows through on assigned work, and looks for ways to support the team when priorities shift. Reliability, integrity, and attention to detail are essential.
Strong candidates will have:
  • 1-3 years of experience in AV installation, low-voltage cabling, construction, or related hands-on technical work preferred
  • Foundational knowledge of AV systems, cabling, and signal flow, or a strong willingness and aptitude to learn
  • Ability to pull, route, label, terminate, and test cables
  • Experience using hand tools, power tools, and job-site equipment safely and effectively
  • Familiarity with construction sites, job-site safety, and working around other trades
  • Ability to read or learn to interpret system diagrams, wiring plans, layouts, or installation drawings
  • Comfort using computers and common business software, including email, spreadsheets, shared folders, project documentation, equipment tracking, and purchasing or shipping platforms
  • Ability to support system testing, troubleshooting, quality checks, equipment tracking, shipping coordination, and job-site logistics
  • Fluent in spoken and written English
  • Authorized to work in the United States
  • Valid U.S. driver's license and reliable transportation
  • Ability and willingness to travel for projects, including extended on-site assignments when needed

Preferred Experience
  • Experience building, wiring, and organizing AV equipment racks
  • Experience terminating and testing AV, low-voltage, or network cabling, such as Ethernet, XLR, HDMI, BNC, or similar connectors
  • Experience mounting displays, speakers, projectors, LED walls, and related hardware
  • Experience working from system drawings, wiring diagrams, or installation plans
  • Carpentry, construction, or related trade experience, including measuring, cutting, assembling, mounting, or building support structures for equipment installation
  • Experience working in themed entertainment, exhibits, immersive environments, live entertainment, or venue-based installations

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • This role includes both preparation work and hands-on work in our office and warehouse, construction environments, and active installation sites.
  • Must be able to lift, load, and organize AV equipment such as cables, speakers, screens, racks, and related components. Employees may be required to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods, climb ladders, work at heights, use power tools, and work in confined spaces when running cables or mounting equipment.
  • Forklifts, pallet jacks, or other equipment may be used to move heavier items.
  • Work conditions may vary by project and may include outdoor environments, changing weather conditions, large commercial spaces, and construction sites in progress.
  • Project schedules may require work outside normal business hours, including evenings or weekends, depending on client needs and installation timelines.
  • Travel may be required between the office and job sites, including out-of-state or international assignments and extended on-site stays.

Benefits
  • Generous PTO and paid major holidays
  • Paid opportunities for professional growth and development
  • Cell phone reimbursement
  • Opportunities to travel to exciting cities and project locations
  • A collaborative, supportive team of experienced professionals
