Automotive Controller – Family-Owned Dealership - Toledo, OH area


A well-established, family-owned dealership in the Toledo, OH market is seeking an experienced Automotive Controller to step into a long-term leadership role. The current Controller is retiring after many years with the company which is why the position is becoming available. Clean books and turnkey office in place. The successful candidate is a dealership Controller who has a strong and stable track record in automotive accounting and understands the "why" behind the numbers.

This position requires a highly trustworthy Automotive Controller with a strong sense of urgency, the ability to perform under pressure, and the leadership skills to oversee critical accounting and administrative functions. The Controller hired will work closely with the Dealer Principal and will be entrusted with maintaining the financial integrity of the operation. This position reports directly to the Dealer Principal who is looking for a Controller that is a true business partner and another set of eyes and ears around the dealership. The Controller will also be responsible to handle HR and payroll functions for the dealership.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all dealership accounting operations and supervise the accounting office
  • Own the month-end close process and ensure timely, accurate financial statements
  • Prepare and submit monthly financial statements to the manufacturer/OEM
  • Maintain an accurate general ledger and review schedules for discrepancies
  • Oversee bank, floorplan, and general ledger reconciliations
  • Monitor cash flow, daily deposits, contracts in transit (CIT), receivables, and aged schedules
  • Reconcile vehicle inventory, floorplan balances, and factory statements
  • Review deal postings to ensure accurate gross, commissions, funding, and accounting
  • Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable
  • Ensure all vehicle deals are funded, posted, and finalized promptly
  • Monitor warranty receivables, rebates, incentives, chargebacks, and manufacturer payments
  • Review payroll, commissions, bonuses, and related reconciliations
  • Maintain internal controls and protect dealership assets
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, dealership policies, lender requirements, tax regulations, and manufacturer standards
  • Coordinate sales tax, property tax, payroll tax, and other required filings
  • Prepare budgets, forecasts, and financial reports for ownership and senior management
  • Identify accounting errors, process gaps, unusual activity, and opportunities to improve profitability
  • Recruit, train, cross-train, and evaluate accounting-office employees
  • Support the Dealer Principal and General Manager with financial analysis and business decisions
  • Maintain confidentiality of employee, customer, payroll, and financial information


Qualifications:

  • Proven experience as an Automotive Controller in a dealership environment
  • Strong knowledge of dealership accounting systems and best practices
  • Ability to lead under pressure while maintaining accuracy and timeliness
  • High integrity and discretion with sensitive information
  • Accounting Degree is a big plus, but not mandatory.
  • HR and payroll experience preferred
