Automation Simulation Engineer information

What are Automation Simulation Engineers?

Automation Simulation Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and test virtual models of automated systems, such as robotics, manufacturing lines, or industrial processes. They use simulation software to replicate real-world operations, helping companies optimize performance, identify issues, and reduce costs before actual implementation. Their work is crucial in industries like automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing, where efficiency and precision are vital. By simulating automation systems, they enable organizations to make informed decisions and improve overall productivity.

What is the difference between Automation Simulation Engineer vs Automation Test Engineer?

AspectAutomation Simulation EngineerAutomation Test Engineer
Primary FocusDeveloping and validating simulation models for automation systemsDesigning and executing automated tests for software and hardware
Required SkillsSimulation software, control systems, programming (e.g., Python, MATLAB)Testing frameworks, scripting, defect tracking
Work EnvironmentEngineering labs, R&D departments, manufacturing settingsSoftware development teams, QA departments, manufacturing
Industry UsageManufacturing, robotics, industrial automationSoftware development, electronics, automation industries

While both roles involve automation, the Automation Simulation Engineer focuses on creating virtual models to test automation systems, whereas the Automation Test Engineer concentrates on executing automated tests to ensure software and hardware quality. Both roles require technical skills and are vital in automation industries, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

How does an Automation Simulation Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during project development?

Automation Simulation Engineers frequently work alongside controls engineers, mechanical designers, and project managers to ensure simulation models accurately reflect real-world system behaviors. Collaboration often involves participating in design reviews, sharing simulation results, and iterating on model parameters based on feedback from different departments. Effective communication and teamwork are crucial, as simulation insights guide design choices, troubleshoot potential issues, and optimize automation processes before physical implementation. This cross-disciplinary approach ensures smoother project execution and greater system reliability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Automation Simulation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Automation Simulation Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, control systems, and process automation, usually supported by a degree in electrical, mechanical, or automation engineering. Proficiency with simulation software (such as Siemens Tecnomatix, Rockwell Arena, or MATLAB/Simulink), programming languages, and PLC systems is crucial, and certifications in automation or simulation tools are often valued. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills enable you to interpret complex data and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills are essential to ensure accurate modeling, efficient automation solutions, and successful project outcomes in industrial environments.

Job description

Rockwell Automation is a global technology leader focused on helping the world's manufacturers be more productive, sustainable, and agile. With more than 28,000 employees who make the world better every day, we know we have something special. Behind our customers - amazing companies that help feed the world, provide life-saving medicine on a global scale, and focus on clean water and green mobility - our people are energized problem solvers that take pride in how the work we do changes the world for the better.
We welcome all makers, forward thinkers, and problem solvers who are looking for a place to do their best work. And if that's you we would love to have you join us!
Job Description
Why Join Us
At Rockwell Automation, you won't just be designing another incremental hardware update - you'll help shape the next generation of industrial motion control platforms.
As an Embedded Hardware Engineer, you will work on complex, high-performance electronics that sit at the core of motion systems used across global industrial applications.
You will have the opportunity to:
  • Build hardware and product - taking designs from idea to production
  • Work in a deeply technical and versatile environment
  • Design embedded hardware or converters, inverters and ICT technology for industrial environment.
  • Grow both technically and professionally, with increasing scope, responsibility, and influence over product direction and architecture.
  • Our global engineering culture values collaboration, technical thoughtfulness, and new ideas. The environment is fast-paced and dynamic contributing to multiple products.

You will work on a team comprised of engineers across multiple disciplines (e.g., mechanical, power electronics, embedded software) to bring our product roadmaps to life.
Expand Beyond Traditional Servo Drives
While you will work on advanced servo drive hardware, its scope goes well beyond conventional motion control. You will also contribute to the evolution of Independent Cart Technology (ICT) - a growing motion technology that introduces new architectural challenges and opportunities, including:
  • Distributed control, network and power architectures
  • High-performance communication and synchronization
  • Scalability, modularity, and system-level robustness

The Essentials - You Will Have:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Relevant Field.

The Preferred - You Might Also Have:
  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years experience.
  • Advanced understanding of fundamental electrical engineering principles, including circuit analysis, control theory, and electromagnetics, applied to complex, real-world industrial systems.
  • Expertise in designing and supporting power supplies and embedded control hardware in production-grade products, including processors, memory, peripherals, and industrial interfaces.
  • Expertise in analog and mixed-signal circuit design, including signal conditioning, filter design, voltage and current sensing, gate-drive circuits, and protection circuitry.
  • Experience laboratory and hardware bring-up skills, including use of oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power analysis equipment, systematic hardware debug techniques and ability to write low-level drivers.
  • Practical experience with EMI/EMC mitigation techniques, PCB layout best practices, high-speed digital design considerations, thermal management, and noise-robust hardware architectures.
  • Practical experience communicating complex hardware and system-level concepts to stakeholders
  • Proficiency with modeling and simulation tools (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, LTspice, Simplorer, HyperLynx, Maxwell, or similar) for system-level analysis, signal integrity evaluation, and hardware trade studies.
  • Working knowledge of embedded and programmable hardware platforms, including microprocessors, digital logic devices, CPLDs, FPGAs, and Ethernet-based industrial communication (IEEE 802.3).
  • Experience with test automation (for example Python), and data analysis tools.
  • Exposure to AI-enabled hardware, AI-assisted design tools, or data-driven engineering workflows.
  • Knowledge of security-enabled hardware architectures and secure-by-design principles, including hardware root of trust, secure boot, device identity, and secure update mechanisms, with awareness of industrial cybersecurity and safety standards such as EN/IEC 50742 and their application across the product development lifecycle.
  • Master's or PhD in Electrical Engineering
