Job description

Automation Design Engineer – Robotics/7th Axis Systems
Auburn Hills, MI

Long-Term Contract (Direct Hire Possibility)

We are seeking an Engineer (Development) to support the design, development, and validation of robotic 7th axis rail systems and related automation products. This role focuses on mechanical and controls design, prototype testing, and engineering support across product lifecycle—from concept through production release.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and engineer new standard robotic rail products and 7th axis systems
  • Develop and refine 3D models and detailed drawings for rail systems, add-ons, bulkheads, and robot controller interface packages
  • Support prototype builds, testing, and validation of rail components and peripheral systems (lube systems, cable carriers, cabling)
  • Conduct engineering design reviews while maintaining ISO-compliant documentation standards
  • Perform linear axis design work including drive sizing, FEA, DFM, and GD&T applications
  • Release engineering packages through ERP systems and maintain revision control
  • Provide technical support for manufacturing, integration, and floor-level troubleshooting
  • Assist with failure analysis, root cause investigations, and corrective action reporting
  • Develop technical presentations for internal teams, integrators, and customers
  • Support continuous improvement of engineering standards and cost optimization initiatives


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics Engineering, or related technical field (or equivalent experience)
  • Minimum 3+ years of industrial automation design experience using CAD software
  • Strong proficiency in SolidWorks and AutoCAD
  • Ability to read and create mechanical prints, electrical interface drawings, and robot documentation
  • Experience with robotics systems and peripheral equipment integration


Preferred Experience:

  • Linear bearing and 7th axis rail system design
  • Robotics integration and automation cell experience
  • Exposure to ERP systems and engineering change processes


Key Competencies:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills across technical and non-technical audiences
  • Strong teamwork and self-management in dynamic engineering environments

  • Occasional travel (5–10%) for project support and installations
  • Mix of office-based engineering and manufacturing floor support
