Engineering Design information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Engineering Design, and why are they important?

To thrive in Engineering Design, a strong background in mathematics, physics, and engineering principles is essential, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with CAD software, simulation tools, and knowledge of industry standards or certifications like PE (Professional Engineer) are typically required. Creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration are vital soft skills that help drive innovative solutions and effective teamwork. These skills and qualifications are crucial for producing safe, efficient, and high-quality engineering designs that meet client and regulatory requirements.

How do engineering design professionals typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

Engineering design professionals often work closely with teams such as manufacturing, quality assurance, procurement, and project management throughout the project lifecycle. Effective collaboration ensures that design specifications are feasible, cost-effective, and meet safety and regulatory standards. This usually involves regular meetings, design reviews, and clear communication channels to address feedback or constraints from various stakeholders. Such cross-functional teamwork is crucial to successfully translating concepts into functional, manufacturable products.

What is engineering design?

Engineering design is a systematic, creative process used by engineers to develop solutions to technical problems. It involves defining a problem, researching requirements, brainstorming ideas, creating prototypes, testing, and refining solutions to meet specific needs. The process often includes considering factors such as safety, cost, functionality, and sustainability. Engineering design is fundamental in creating products, systems, and structures used in everyday life.

What is the difference between Engineering Design vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectEngineering DesignMechanical Engineering
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, design certificationsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, PE license
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, CAD labsManufacturing plants, labs, fieldwork
Industry UsageProduct development, CAD modelingMechanical systems, machinery
Common Search IntentDesign processes, CAD toolsMechanical systems, thermodynamics

Engineering Design focuses on creating and developing product concepts using CAD and design principles, often working in design offices. Mechanical Engineering covers a broader scope, including analysis, manufacturing, and testing of mechanical systems. While both roles require engineering degrees, Mechanical Engineers often hold professional licenses and work in diverse environments like manufacturing and testing facilities. Understanding these differences helps job seekers find roles aligned with their skills and career goals.

Job Description
We made history and now we work to transform the future - for our customers, our communities and our families. You'll see your work on the road every day, helping people move freely and pursue their dreams. At Ford, you can build more than vehicles. Come build what matters.
Product Development uses design thinking & user experience methods to deliver breakthrough products and services that delight our customers. We bring innovative, exciting, and sustainable ideas to life. We have opportunities around the world for you to contribute to advancements in autonomy, electrification, smart mobility technologies, and more!
As a CAD Efficiencies Supervisor, your passion is to be part of movements much bigger than yourself. You will be the liaison between the Engineering Design Global CAD organization and Digital Transformation, Program Production, IT and software vendors working together to drive culture change, manage software testing initiatives, and investigating potential process developments to keep our systems at the forefront. You will lead a dynamic team of visionary developers dedicated to enhancing efficiency of the Engineering Design Global CAD Team. Your leadership will empower our engineering designers to deliver the innovative hardware systems and components that our customers love. You will champion an agile approach to conceptualize, develop, and implement advanced CAD tools and methodologies for CATIA V5 and 3DExperience. Your strategic oversight will directly impact the speed and quality of our world-class vehicle designs by reducing design and release cycles, eliminating redundancies, and enforcing critical standards compliance. This role demands a flexible, adaptable, and inspiring leader, capable of balancing multiple development activities and guiding a team within a rapidly evolving, technologically-driven environment.
This is a pivotal leadership position in CAD standards, processes, and tool development, where your expertise in project management, CAD systems (CATIA V5, 3DExperience), and a deep understanding of engineering design processes will be paramount. You will foster a highly collaborative environment, partnering closely with our Program Production, Digital Transformation, IT teams and software vendors. You will work with customers of CAD Deliverables to ensure our organization provides robust, consumable data that meets their needs. You will be instrumental in guiding Ford Motor Company's digital transformation from our legacy, file-based toolset to a modern, object-based modeling environment. Your priority is to ensure CAD tools, methodologies, and processes are optimized for our modern toolset.
Responsibilities
In this position...
  • Lead the development and implementation of strategic efficiency projects, fostering collaboration with Digital Transformation, Information Technology, software vendors, and other stakeholders to deliver cutting-edge solutions that enhance CAD development and satisfy CAD Deliverables.
  • Champion innovation and strategic ideation for future CAD development processes in 3DExperience, continuously exploring the "art of the possible."
  • Collect end-user feedback to define and prioritize process areas for improvement, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
  • Lead the troubleshooting and triage of complex end-user issues related to CAD, PLM, and efficiency tool usage, ensuring timely resolution.
  • Manage legacy / CATIA V5 tools, processes, and methods, and guide the up-conversion of CATIA V5 User Defined Features (UDFs), Powercopies, and macros to the 3DExperience platform.

What you'll do...
  • Oversee the creation, management, and rollout of regional and global procedure documentation, ensuring clarity and adherence to standards.
  • Oversee and manage the testing of new releases for 3DExperience, CATIA V5, and Teamcenter.
  • Work with Digital Transformation to develop comprehensive training programs and provide expert-level support for efficiency tools and processes to end-users.
  • Mentor team members in corporate standards, regional, and global methods, Teamcenter, CATIA V5, and 3DExperience, fostering continuous growth and expertise.

Qualifications
You'll have...
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 3 years in a leadership role with experience in project management.
  • Demonstrated experience leading efficiency projects, investigating diverse technologies, and strong technical writing skills for methodology documentation.
  • Exceptional teamwork and collaboration skills, with a track record of partnering with stakeholders.
  • Experience with developing and conducting training, as well as user support.
  • Strong participation in continuous development.

Even better, you may have...
  • Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with software development using C#, Windows Presentation Foundation, Python, C++/CAA RADE, web development, or 3DExperience widget development.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience designing in CATIA V5 / Teamcenter / 3DExperience.
  • Experience in creating efficiency tools in CATIA V5 / Teamcenter and/or 3DExperience Comprehensive understanding of Ford CAD / GPDS processes, deliverables, and standards.
