Job description

JOB SUMMARY

The Claims Specialist shall serve as a member of the McKenney's risk management team in Atlanta, GA, supporting the Company's auto and general liability claims programs, fleet operations, and technology initiatives.
This Position is responsible for the day-to-day management of claims intake and administration, oversight of the company’s fleet's compliance and driver qualification files, and execution of technical projects that improve the department's efficiency and analytical capabilities.

The candidate of Interest, will possess foundational claims experience, genuine curiosity about technology, and the organizational skills to manage competing priorities across several workstreams. This Position reports directly to the General Counsel and offers significant opportunity for professional growth as the Company's risk function matures.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Claims Management:

  • Serve as the first point of contact for auto accident intake, gathering incident details, coordinating with drivers and field supervisors, and documenting claims in the claims management system
  • Manage auto liability and general liability claims from initial report through resolution, including investigation, reserving, settlement coordination, and closure
  • Monitor claim status and aging, flag high-exposure or litigated claims, and prepare summary reports for leadership
  • Coordinate with third-party administrators, insurance carriers, and defense counsel on open claims matters
  • Maintain organized claim files and ensure documentation meets internal standards and carrier requirements
  • Track and analyze claims data to identify trends, root causes, and opportunities for loss reduction

Fleet Administration:

  • Order, review, and maintain motor vehicle records (MVRs) for all drivers across applicable jurisdictions, ensuring compliance with Company policy and applicable regulations
  • Manage driver qualification files, vehicle assignment records, and fleet compliance documentation
  • Coordinate with operations and human resources on driver eligibility determinations, license expirations, and violation follow-up
  • Support vehicle insurance and registration processes, including certificate of insurance requests and auto ID card distribution
  • Assist with fleet safety initiatives and contribute data and analysis to fleet performance reviews

Technical Projects:

  • Identify opportunities to automate manual processes within the risk management function using available tools and platforms
  • Build and maintain dashboards, trackers, and reporting tools that provide leadership visibility into claims, fleet, and risk metrics
  • Explore and potentially develop AI-powered tools within the Company's technology stack to improve claims triage, data extraction, or risk scoring
  • Partner with IT and other departments on system integrations, data migrations, or technology rollouts that affect risk operations

Training and Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Assist in the development and delivery of the Company's driver training program, including scheduling and recordkeeping
  • Conduct or support driver safety training sessions for new hires and existing employees as required
  • Communicate risk policies, procedures, and expectations to field teams and operational leaders in clear, accessible terms
  • Serve as a resource for internal stakeholders on claims reporting procedures, fleet policies, and risk-related questions

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in risk management, insurance, business administration, or equivalent experience in a related field.
  • 1 to  4 years of professional experience in risk management, claims adjusting, insurance, or a closely related field
  • Direct experience handling auto liability and/or general liability claims, including intake, investigation, reserving, and resolution
  • Internal candidates: 1 to 2 years of experience as a Field Supervisor, Assistant Project Manager, or in the Safety Department, with the successful completion of Pathway to Field Leadership, Pathway to Project Manager, or department equivalent.
  • Direct exposure to McKenney’s incident reporting, fleet operations, or driver management.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Claims and Insurance Knowledge:

  • Working knowledge of auto and general liability claims processes, coverage analysis, and loss-run reporting
  • Understanding of commercial auto insurance policies, certificates of insurance, and basic coverage interpretation

Technical Skills:

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and preferred experience with Smartsheet
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

Soft Skills:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain claims processes and risk concepts to non-risk stakeholders
  • Organized and detail-oriented, capable of managing multiple open claims files, fleet records, and project timelines simultaneously
  • Self-starter mentality with a willingness to take ownership of processes and improve them over time

Abilities:

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain attention to detail in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to learn and work within the Company's existing technology stack, including internal databases and reporting tools
  • Comfort pulling and analyzing data to support risk decisions and reporting

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience interfacing with third-party administrators, insurance carriers, or defense counsel
  • Familiarity with claims management systems (e.g., Origami Risk, RMIS, or similar platforms)
  • Experience with or ability to quickly learn fleet administration tasks, including MVR ordering and review, vehicle assignments, driver file maintenance, and DOT compliance basics
  • Comfort managing data and workflows for a large fleet (Salesforce)
  • Interest in or experience with automation, AI tools, or low-code/no-code platforms (e.g., Workato or prompt engineering for AI applications)
  • Associate in risk management (ARM), Associate in Claims (AIC), or similar designation (in progress or completed)
  • Ability to develop and deliver training content (e.g., driver safety training) to field-level employees
  • Experience developing or delivering training programs
  • Bilingual ability (Spanish/English), depending on workforce composition

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORTS

  • Work normally takes place in a typical interior/office environment.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • No very limited physical effort is required.
