Position Details
Advertising/Posting Title Decarbonization Manager Posting Summary
The Decarbonization Manager focuses on advancing the buildings, energy and climate goals in the University of Vermont's Comprehensive Sustainability Plan and supports programs that contribute to the Office of Sustainability's mission of bridging academics and operations to advance campus sustainability. This position leads building energy benchmarking, utility rebate tracking, and the University's annual greenhouse gas inventory and uses this data to develop decarbonization strategy. They support the development and implementation of decarbonization strategies related to energy efficiency, conservation, and renewables. They develop reports, presentations, and data visualizations for internal and public audiences. They lead tracking of relevant energy and climate policy to inform institutional decision-making. This person collaborates closely with technical staff in Physical Plant Department and Planning, Design & Construction to identify decarbonization opportunities and support sustainable design integration across projects of all scales. This includes direct management of selected projects, and management or support of ongoing programs including the Sustainable Campus Fund, Green Labs, Sustainable Solutions Lab and Energy Eco-Reps
Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, energy systems, environmental science, sustainability, building science, construction management, architecture, business or other relevant fields.
  • Three years of relevant work experience in energy management, renewables, energy efficiency, energy program management, GHG tracking, construction management, project management, sustainability, program implementation or other relevant fields.
  • Familiarity with utility, building, HVAC and energy distribution system operations.
  • Ability to interpret energy policy and climate targets.
  • Ability to inform broad decarbonization strategies and recommend specific opportunities.
  • Ability to work effectively without direct technical supervision. Comfortable seeking support and collaborating regularly across departments.
  • Ability to lead committees or planning processes and manage projects and programs.
  • Ability to communicate technical topics to general audiences, including students, staff, faculty and leadership. Experience giving presentations, writing reports, and visualizing data. 
  • Ability to effectively manage projects, including collaborating with utility partners, managing contractors, and coordinating internal stakeholders.
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, excellent file management.
Desirable Qualifications
Understanding of greenhouse gas emissions tracking and carbon offset market.
Experience completing financial analysis of projects.
Experience working with centralized or district energy systems.
Experience working in higher education and working with faculty and students.
Holds a current green building certification (ex: LEED, WELL, etc)
Professional Engineer (PE) Certification or CEM (Certified Energy Manager)
Experience using PowerBi, Energy STAR Portfolio Manager or GRITS.
Masters degree in related field.
Demonstrated experience across minimum qualification categories.
Experience supervising students or other employees.
Anticipated Pay Range $65,000 - $80,000 annually Other Information
Should the selected candidate possess an Engineering degree and significant years of experience, pay above the anticipated pay range may be possible.
