Position Details
Advertising/Posting Title Grant Proposal Developer Posting Summary
Under the direction of the UVM Director of Research Development, the Team Lead Unit-Level Research Development and RD Programs, and the Senior Associate Dean for Research within the Larner College of Medicine (LCOM), this position will provide substantive grant writing and proposal management support to LCOM faculty seeking external funding, with an emphasis on federally sponsored research projects and grants. This position reports to the UVM Research Development Team Lead for Unit-Level Research Development and RD Programs.
Key functions include: 1) Proposal development and grantsmanship support - Provide substantive writing, editing, and strategic review of grant proposals to strengthen clarity, responsiveness, organization, and overall competitiveness; 2) Proposal project management - Guide proposals from concept through submission by developing timelines, coordinating required components, managing internal and external deadlines, and ensuring sponsor and institutional requirements are met; and 3) Faculty support and funding opportunity alignment - Support LCOM faculty seeking external funding by maintaining knowledge of relevant sponsors, identifying appropriate funding opportunities, and helping translate complex research ideas into compelling proposal materials.
Competitive candidates will have significant experience with National Institutes of Health grant mechanisms, familiarity with other sponsors that support biomedical research, and previous experience in the development, writing, and/or support of biomedical research proposals.
Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant STEM or writing-focused discipline and two to four years of experience writing and editing scientific/technical research proposals or articles required.
  • Ability to work flexibly, productively, and collegially with the writing of others required.
  • Ability to organize, analyze, and interpret complex scientific, medical, or technical data, including the ability to translate difficult technical information into language suitable for target audiences, required.
  • Demonstrated success managing complex projects within time constraints and coordinating teams required.
  • Effective time and deadline management skills, with ability to prioritize responsibilities, attend to details, take initiative, and work independently to carry out difficult assignments required.
  • Ability to work professionally as part of a broader research development team that may include faculty, staff, and senior administrators required.
  • Effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills required.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in a relevant biomedical or STEM discipline.
  • Experience writing and editing material in a wide range of disciplines desirable.
  • Experience developing successful grant proposals to federal sponsors desirable.
  • Project management expertise desirable.
  • Ability to create figures and other graphical representations of data desirable.
  • Ability to develop and interpret budgets for sponsored projects desirable.
  • Sponsored project administration pre-award experience desirable.
