Job description

Product Owner, ATLAS
Company: Omitron, Inc.
Location: Remote (proximity to Omitron's Colorado Springs, CO office preferred; on-site as required for program success)
Reports to: Omitron ATLAS Manager
Position Overview
Omitron supports the U.S. Space Force's Space Domain Awareness (SDA) mission with the software that tracks the tens of thousands of objects in Earth orbit. The Advanced Tracking and Launch Analysis System (ATLAS) delivers scalable, cloud-integrated capability across every phase of tracking a satellite, from launch to reentry. ATLAS is built by multiple product teams, each responsible for a portion of the overall capability and each dependent on the others to deliver something the operator experiences as a single system.
We are seeking an experienced Product Owner to lead an integrated software product team of developers, testers, and support functions within ATLAS. You will own the product vision, roadmap, and backlog for your team, translating the operational needs of Space Situational Awareness (SSA) and SDA users into clear, implementable capability. You will work with ATLAS program leadership, including the Program Manager, Lead Engineer, and peer Product Owners, to sequence dependencies across teams and deliver a functional, integrated product rather than a standalone component.
This is a senior role. You will set direction rather than receive it, and you will be accountable both for whether your team builds what the mission needs and for how cleanly that work fits the larger ATLAS baseline.
Responsibilities
As Product Owner for ATLAS, you are accountable for:
Product Vision and Roadmap
* Create and maintain a user-centric, capability-focused vision and roadmap for your team, aligned to ATLAS program priorities and customer mission needs.
* Define, order, and maintain the team backlog so development effort is directed at the highest value-added capabilities.
* Balance new capability, sustainment, and technical debt in coordination with the ATLAS Lead Engineer and peer Product Owners.
* Coordinate with peer Product Owners to sequence cross-team dependencies and keep your team’s roadmap consistent with the integrated ATLAS baseline.Agile Execution
* Write user stories and acceptance criteria clear enough that development and test can execute against them without ambiguity.
* Refine the backlog with the team so upcoming work is ready, understood, and correctly sized before planning.
* Represent the customer in program increment and sprint planning, supplying prioritized, well-formed work for the team to plan against.
* Accept or reject completed work against defined acceptance criteria and maintain a release cadence the customer can plan around.
* Partner with the Scrum Master on delivery flow and impediment resolution; escalate risks affecting scope, schedule, or cross-team dependencies to ATLAS program leadership.Stakeholder and Requirements Management
* Capture and advocate for stakeholder needs among developers, testers, and management.
* Articulate SSA and SDA capability needs to stakeholders and developers, translating operational language into implementable requirements and technical constraints back into mission terms.
* Serve as the day-to-day product interface with government stakeholders and mission users; conduct demonstrations and convert feedback into backlog items.
* Coordinate with lateral development and user teams to ensure maximum synergy between concurrent development efforts.Team Support and Delivery Quality
* Advocate for software accuracy, usability, and output consistency with the operational systems ATLAS supports.
* Support the team by augmenting skill gaps as necessary. These gaps may include software development, software testing, document generation, and user training.
* Contribute to onboarding of new team members and ensure lessons learned are captured and applied across increments.
Minimum Requirements * US Citizenship required
* Security Clearance: Active TS/SCI required.
* Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Space Operations, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field. Four additional years of relevant experience may substitute for the degree.
* Experience:
* 8 or more years of relevant experience in software development, astrodynamics engineering, or SSA/SDA operations.
* Demonstrated experience as a Product Owner, technical lead, or equivalent role on an Agile software development team, including ownership and prioritization of a product backlog.
* Experience in one or more of the following: astrodynamics software development, SSA or SDA operations, or technical software development using an Agile philosophy.
* Proven ability to write user stories and acceptance criteria that result in predictable delivery.
* Advanced skillset in time management and task prioritization across competing stakeholder demands.
* Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to brief both development teams and government leadership.
* Ability to work independently, identify opportunities for process improvement, and drive them to adoption.
Preferred Qualifications * Education: Master’s degree in Computer Science, Space Operations, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field.
* Experience:
* 12 or more years of relevant experience, with a focus on Space Domain Awareness operations and/or software development.
* Prior experience with ATLAS, SPADOC, ASW, or comparable SDA mission systems.
* Experience in Space Force SSA or SDA operations at Vandenberg SFB, Schriever SFB, or Naval Support Facility Dahlgren.
* Working familiarity with Java, full-stack web development, or cloud-integrated architectures sufficient to engage credibly with the development team on design trade-offs.
* Familiarity with test automation frameworks, test-driven development, and CI/CD pipelines.
* Experience with Jira, Confluence, and the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe).
* Experience in one or more ATLAS team competencies such as software development, software testing, technical training, or technical documentation.
* Prior work with government or DoD customers.
* Certifications: Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO), SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager (POPM), Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), or equivalent Agile certification; DoD 8570/8140 IAT Level II (e.g., Security+ CE).
Working Relationships * Reports to: Omitron ATLAS Manager.
* Leads: An integrated ATLAS product team of software developers, test engineers, and supporting functions.
* Collaborates with: ATLAS program leadership, including the Program Manager, Lead Engineer, and peer Product Owners; team Scrum Master; lateral development and user teams.
* Customer Interface: Government program stakeholders and mission users; Prime program personnel, as delegated.
Schedule and Environment * Remote position; proximity to Omitron's Colorado Springs, CO office is preferred, with on-site presence as required for program increment planning, software test, deployment, and problem resolution.
* Work is accomplished primarily Monday through Friday during standard business hours; due to the operational nature of the supported mission, work may occasionally be required outside those times.
* Travel is required. Product Owners travel for program planning events and to user sites to support user engagements and software rollouts. Expect approximately 4 to 8 weeks of travel per year for a Colorado-based candidate.
* Candidates based outside Colorado should expect roughly 3 additional weeks of travel per year to attend planning events in Colorado Springs.
