Job Summary
BioLegend is looking for an Associate Scientist to join the Recombinant Protein team. This position is responsible for developing functional protein products using cutting-edge protein expression and purification technologies. The individual will contribute to business revenue by transforming scientific knowledge into high-quality, sellable products.
The candidate should demonstrate a strong ability to self-start and adapt to the company's quality system. Duties include designing and implementing gene-to-protein workflows to produce high-quality recombinant proteins for use as research reagents in a fast-paced environment. The individual will develop and optimize protein expression, purification, and characterization processes across both prokaryotic and eukaryotic expression platforms. The candidate should possess excellent critical thinking and technical skills, along with sufficient troubleshooting experience to develop products efficiently while ensuring quality and safety. The individual will also participate in initiating sustainability efforts for existing designs based on market demand.

The individual will perform laboratory-based protein processing, including cell lysis, refolding, and purification using various preparative chromatography methods, to develop final product formulations. They will actively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure the on-time delivery of internal and external custom orders and projects within the organization.
Essential Functions

  • Familiar with recombinant protein product expression platforms of various protein families such as cytokines, growth factors, enzymes, ligand receptors, and recombinant immunogens from different research areas such as carcinogenesis, immunology, neuroscience, etc.

  • Implement bacterial protein expression culture and develop and run protein purification schemes using various chromatography methods on various platforms (i.e., AKTA FPLC, HPLC).

  • Follow GDP (Good Document Practices) on processing records and conduct technical transfer under ISO9001:2008/ISO13485:2016 standards.

  • Participate in product design and developmental stage review. Provide quality records to ensure traceability and risk control for product releasing.

  • Own assigned product family in new product development and is responsible for driving projects to their completion.

  • Support troubleshooting and optimization on protein expression, homogeneity, and stability of developing and released products.

  • Work with the team and QA to execute and validate different protein processes, equipment and chemistry protocols.

  • Support to facilitate Manufacturing Group for purification/QC workflow development and SOP optimizing/ troubleshooting in various production stages, including expression constructs, culture systems, purification schemes, formulation, and stability issues.

  • Establish, coordinate, and communicate project timelines and deliverables with internal, and external team to provide weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports.

  • Responsible for personnel training, goal setting and performance management.

  • Maintain a current knowledge of protein chemistry, synthetic biology, and scientific literature.

  • Other project responsibilities may be required.

Minimum Qualifications - Education and Experience
  • B.S. degree with minimum 6 years' experience in Biotechnology industry

  • M.S. degree with minimum 3 years' experience in Biotechnology industry

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience with protein purification via various chromatography methods.

Preferred Qualifications - Education and Experience
  • PhD degree in Life Sciences or related fields with Biotechnology industry experience with demonstrated quality system knowledge including ISO 13485.

  • Experience in protein product production including protein expression and purification proteins

  • Extensive experience in protein or antibody purification and modification.

  • Extensive experience in process optimization for production scale up.

The base salary range for this full-time position is $90,000 - 100,000. This range reflects the minimum and maximum target for a new hire in this position. The base pay actually offered to the successful candidate will take into account internal equity, work location, and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.
Please note that base pay is only one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This range allows for the successful candidate to have an opportunity to progress within the position and develop at our company. This base pay range does not take into account bonuses, equity, or other benefits which may be applicable and are dependent on the level and position offered.
