What is a Downstream Scientist job?

A Downstream Scientist is responsible for the purification and recovery of biological products, such as proteins, antibodies, or viral vectors, after production in upstream processes. They develop and optimize techniques like chromatography, filtration, and centrifugation to ensure product purity and yield. Downstream Scientists work in industries such as biopharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and bioprocessing, often collaborating with upstream teams, analytical scientists, and regulatory professionals. Their role is critical in ensuring that biologic drugs and therapeutics meet quality and regulatory standards for patient use.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Downstream Scientist position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Downstream Scientist, you need a solid background in biochemistry, chemical engineering, or related life sciences, with expertise in protein purification, chromatography, and process optimization. Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), analytical instruments like HPLC and FPLC, and relevant GMP or GLP certifications is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are essential for maintaining product quality, meeting regulatory standards, and ensuring smooth collaboration in biopharmaceutical manufacturing environments.

What are the typical challenges faced by Downstream Scientists, and how can they prepare for them?

Downstream Scientists often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting purification processes, optimizing yield and consistency, and meeting stringent regulatory requirements. Adapting to evolving technologies and variable production scales can also be demanding, especially in dynamic biopharmaceutical settings. Gaining hands-on experience with diverse purification methods and staying updated with industry best practices can help you address these challenges effectively. Collaborating closely with upstream and quality assurance teams is also crucial for smooth workflow and continuous improvement.

Job description

Position Summary

We are seeking a Laboratory Scientist who will play a central role in developing, evaluating, and optimizing chemical products used in refinery operations. This position supports both laboratory and field focused initiatives, ensuring that new and existing formulations deliver reliable performance in demanding process environments. The role requires strong technical expertise, hands-on analytical skills, and the ability to translate laboratory findings into actionable recommendations for refinery customers.  This role is based at our Woodlands Laboratory.

Essential Functions

Work in laboratory environment wherein chemical and hydrocarbon odors may be present

Product Development & Formulation

  • Design, develop, and optimize chemical formulations for refinery applications (e.g., demulsifiers, fouling control, corrosion inhibition, antifoams, fuel additives, process aids).
  • Conduct benchscale experiments to evaluate chemical mechanisms, compatibility, and stability.
  • Collaborate with R&D, manufacturing, and commercial teams to transition new products from concept to commercialization.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of formulation work, experimental design, and development progress.

Product Evaluation & Performance Testing

  • Run and maintain an assortment of laboratory equipment
  • Perform laboratory testing to assess product performance under simulated refinery conditions (e.g., temperature, pressure, varying feedstock qualities).
  • Conduct rootcause investigations for product failures or performance deviations.
  • Compare new formulations against benchmarks to identify performance advantages.

Technical Support for Refinery Operations

  • Interpret laboratory results to provide technical recommendations for refinery process improvement.
  • Summarize and present technical findings supported by data internally and externally in customer meetings and industry conferences.
  • Support field trials, product dosing optimization, and troubleshooting activities.

Data Analysis & Reporting

  • Analyze experimental data using statistical tools and modeling techniques.
  • Develop test methods and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for product evaluation.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and ensure compliance with quality and safety standards.

Safety, Compliance & Quality

  • Follow all laboratory safety protocols and refinery site requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, regulatory, and industry standards (e.g., ASTM, API).
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements (REACH, TSCA, SDS authoring).
  • Participate in audits, quality reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency with analytical instrumentation, troubleshooting, and method development.
  • Ability to interpret data from advanced analytical techniques to troubleshoot and solve problems.
  • Knowledge of chemical interactions affecting corrosion, fouling, emulsion stability, and process efficiency.
  • Strong problemsolving and criticalthinking abilities.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or a related field highly preferred; advanced degrees (Master’s or Ph.D.) are a plus.
  • At least 15 years of relevant industry experience in refinery process chemicals. Fuel Additives experience is a plus.
