As of Jun 8, 2026, the average hourly pay for biocatalysis in the United States is $22.53, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.27 and $24.28 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is biocatalysis?

Biocatalysis refers to the use of natural catalysts, such as enzymes or whole cells, to accelerate chemical reactions. It is widely used in industries like pharmaceuticals, food, and biofuels to create more efficient, selective, and environmentally friendly processes compared to traditional chemical methods. Biocatalysis can offer advantages such as mild reaction conditions, high specificity, and reduced need for hazardous chemicals. Researchers and companies use biocatalysis to develop sustainable and cost-effective production methods for a variety of products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Biocatalysis Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Biocatalysis Scientist, you need a solid background in biochemistry, enzymology, and organic chemistry, typically with an advanced degree in a relevant scientific field. Experience with analytical techniques like HPLC, GC-MS, and protein engineering tools, as well as familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), is commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills for this role. These competencies are crucial for optimizing enzyme-catalyzed reactions and driving innovation in sustainable chemical processes.

What are the common collaborative interactions for a biocatalysis professional within a research or industrial setting?

Biocatalysis professionals frequently work in multidisciplinary teams, collaborating with chemists, microbiologists, process engineers, and analytical scientists. They often participate in project meetings to discuss experimental results, troubleshoot challenges, and design new enzyme-based processes. These interactions are essential for integrating biocatalytic steps into larger workflows, optimizing reaction conditions, and ensuring that scale-up considerations are addressed early in development. Effective communication and teamwork are key to successfully advancing biocatalysis projects from research to application.

The candidate will also be responsible for writing and reviewing documentation, regularly updating notebooks, providing updates to management, following all safety protocols in the laboratory, and supporting other laboratory activities as needed.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Work in a collaborative environment, implement biocatalysis under the guidance of a SME, and take full responsibility for a research project.
  • Run enzymatic reactions, isolate pure products, and optimize the reactions to develop scalable processes.
  • Develop assays to evaluate enzyme activity, use high throughput experimentation to prepare enzyme plates, and immobilize enzymes on resins
  • Perform chiral analysis using UPLC and GC, and characterize the products using NMR and MS.
  • Analyze experimental data and properly document experiments (electronic lab notebook and records).
  • Generate protocols, reports, and presentations on performed experiments.
  • Perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment.
  • Perform other laboratory-based activities, as required.

Qualifications
BASIC MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A PhD degree in chemistry, biocatalysis, biochemistry, or a related scientific discipline is required; experienced candidate is preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to quickly adapt to changes in project priorities and timelines.
  • Highly self-motivated, organized, detail-oriented, with a can-do attitude

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience working in a laboratory, particularly in enzyme-catalyzed reactions, enzyme kinetics, protein engineering, photo-biocatalysis, fermentation, enzyme immobilization, or enzyme assays, is preferred but not required
  • A working knowledge of common analytical instruments, including HPLC, GC, KF, NMR, and MS, is preferred.
