The Industrial Designer II-ODM position, as part of the product development team, will lead and collaborate with various stakeholders within the department, sales, business development, and our R&D team overseas to develop manufacturable products for our ODM/NPD sectors through methods such as ideation, visualization, CADD/CAID modeling, concept render, graphic treatment, preparation of design for manufacturing sheet, and prototype analysis/revision. The designer must complete work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Responsible for the following development methods: design research, ideation (brainstorming), concept/development design and refinement, Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CADD)/Computer-Aided Industrial Design (CAID), layout/presentation render proposals, graphic treatments/applications, preparing design for manufacturing sheets (design sheets) which includes layout, detail callouts/drawings, and graphic treatment details/assets assembly; prototype sample analysis and revisions
  • Create a design framework that considers cost, safety, ergonomics, size limits, manufacturing/printing limitations, feasibility, viability, and market desirability for the following categories: Watersports, furniture, toys, etc
  • Utilize development methods in two main company sectors: First, Original Design Manufacturing, which focuses on client-based modification requests, and second, New Product Development (NPD), which focuses on developing new catalog products
  • Collaborate with the product development team, such as product managers & associates, product design managers, industrial designers, graphic designers, and principal designers. Collaborate with other departments, such as sales and business development (Original Design Manufacturing)
  • Attend initial concept kick-off meetings with Bestway clients and the ODM team to assist in refining the design scope, brainstorm solutions, identify manufacturing issues, and request all required style guides/other media to begin a design brief for the team
  • Support our internal inventor relations program by executing inventor ideas and preparing any assets necessary for review by various stakeholders, and provide R&P Sheets and design sheets as necessary
  • Sustain updated knowledge in relevant software and design-related tools
  • Participate in multidisciplinary environments/focus groups or surveys
  • Maintain an organized file system
  • Provide and receive constructive feedback to and from all team members
  • Follow directions and execute manufacturable-based solutions with detail and accuracy
  • Lead all assigned projects from sketch to production with minimal supervision
  • Elevate client ideas by staying up to date with market competition and trends
  • Execute a proactive workflow to provide a bank of ideas ahead of client kickoff/brainstorming sessions
  • Cultivate a close partnership with the ODM Team to stay current in your assigned projects, internal strategies, market maps, and matrices
  • Help maintain and update the internal R&D design manual
  • Update the internal project tracker weekly with the most current information

Requirements

Competencies:

  • Ability to use relevant CADD/CAID software, i.e., Fusion 360. Also, acceptable experience in industry-standard design programs, e.g., SolidWorks, Pro-Engineer, AutoCAD, etc
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes/applications, e.g., high-frequency welding or mold injection, and a general understanding of graphic treatments and printing processes; experience in inflatables or relevant products, e.g., watersports, outdoor toys, furniture, or pools, is a plus
  • Skilled in analog/digital communications, such as sketching and prototyping
  • Ability to adhere to timelines, collaborate with all stakeholders, and communicate effectively by presenting visually interesting ideas that would gain the support of the product development team and other departments
  • Ability to complete designs for manufacturing sheets with minimal supervision
  • Comfortable proposing and executing projects Independently In assigned categories
  • Demonstrate eagerness to learn through curiosity, trial & error, teaching others, and sharing the latest trends, methods, and applications relevant to industrial design or analogous fields
  • Ability to utilize emotional intelligence to help collaborate effectively with a team and design products for various demographics


Required Education and Experience:

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in industrial design or similar field
  • 4 to 6 years of experience
  • Proficient with CAD software. CAD certificates are a plus
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 360: Teams, PowerPoint, Excel, Docs, OneDrive/SharePoint; Mac OS or Windows
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite software/render programs, i.e., Illustrator, Photoshop and Keyshot
  • Experience in InDesign, lightroom, and other relevant render programs such as Rhino, Alias, etc. is a plus
  • Experience with designing toys or related types of consumer products
