What is a Remote Industrial Designer?

A Remote Industrial Designer is a professional who creates and develops concepts and designs for manufactured products while working from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home. They use digital tools and collaborate with teams virtually to design products that are functional, aesthetically pleasing, and user-friendly. Remote Industrial Designers are involved in the entire design process, from initial sketches and 3D models to prototyping and final production specifications. Their work spans various industries, including consumer electronics, automotive, furniture, and more. This role requires strong communication skills and proficiency with design software to effectively contribute to projects from a distance.

Search & ComparisonOften compared for physical product design rolesMore common in digital product design

Remote Industrial Designers focus on creating physical product concepts, often working with CAD tools and manufacturing processes. Remote Product Designers primarily work on digital interfaces and user experiences. While both roles require design skills and portfolios, their industries and tools differ significantly, making them distinct career paths.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Industrial Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Industrial Designer, you need strong skills in product design, 3D modeling, and a degree in industrial design or a related field. Familiarity with technical tools like CAD software (SolidWorks, Rhino, or AutoCAD), rendering programs, and virtual collaboration platforms is essential. Creativity, self-motivation, and effective remote communication are standout soft skills for this position. These abilities ensure you can deliver innovative, practical designs while collaborating efficiently with distributed teams and clients.

How do remote industrial designers effectively collaborate with engineers and other team members across different locations?

Remote industrial designers typically use a combination of collaborative design software, virtual meetings, and shared project management tools to work closely with engineers, marketing teams, and manufacturers. Regular video conferences and digital whiteboarding platforms help bridge the gap created by physical distance, ensuring all stakeholders remain aligned on project goals and design iterations. Successful remote collaboration often requires proactive communication, clear documentation, and flexibility to accommodate different time zones. Building strong relationships with team members and maintaining open channels for feedback are key to overcoming challenges unique to remote teamwork.

Job description

Industrial Designer/Modeler

Industrial Designer/Modeler - AUTOMOBILE or RECREATIONAL VEHICLE Industry

  • Direct Hire/Perm
  • Location - Can be based out of the greater ELKHART, IN area as a remote professional, or as an ONSITE role in NW Alabama.

We are currently looking to add an Industrial Designer to our team due to an increase in workloads and a desire to bring someone on to train for the future, someone who will be working with senior team members in-house, on the design/modeling of vehicle interior parts, including, but not limited to:

  • Front and rear molded parts, such as fiberglass caps, etc.
  • Molded plastic Dashboards/dashboard pieces
  • Other Vehicle Interior molded components.

The ideal candidate can be either an up and comer to a more mid-to-senior level Industrial design professional with a solid background working with sketches/designs and working with surfacing/surface models or solid models and 3D Modeling/Design tools.ย

Experience with surfacing tools such as AUTODESK ALIAS, RHINO or OTHERS would be a must, as would ideally an ability to work with more 3D Solids/solid models, and specifically with SOLIDWORKS. ย Experience with any new Artificial Intelligence driven tools like VIZCOM, etc. is also a plus.

This person will also work with vendors and suppliers who are supplying Thermoforming materials, tooling patterns, and performing other Toolmaking activities for the organization, many of which are based in the ELKHART, IN area, which is why a local candidate may be a good option.

We would like this Designer to bring a Degree to the role, either an Industrial Design Degree or some very targeted hands-on experience and training.ย ย

Those with the preferred 2 year/4-year Engineering Degree will be given priority consideration.

We are IDEALLY SEEKING those with specific RECREATIONAL VEHICLE or AUTOMOTIVE industry designer experience. ย Other experience can be applicable and will be considered, but PRIORITY CONSIDERATION will be given to those with a background designing for the RF/Auto worlds.

A passion for the world of Automotive design, interior design trends and styling, would make for a great fit, as if this work will resemble the work of a car enthusiast, with designs that tend to be more "sporty", and carry a heavy automotive influence of some of the more designer based automaker styles.

For Immediate consideration, please apply to this post directly, AND reach out at russ.holland@cybercoders.com with a resume and we can connect/discuss the details and overlap.ย

- For this position, you must be currently authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship for a non-immigrant visa.
