A freelance industrial designer works on a contract basis to develop ergonomic, innovative, and user-friendly designs for manufactured products. Your responsibilities as an independent industrial designer include determining design requirements by consulting with clients, researching products to determine how people use them, creating sketches or drawings for clients, and developing virtual models of your designs by using computer software. Your other duties include developing physical prototypes according to a client’s specifications, evaluating products for appearance, function, safety, and practicality, and giving demonstrations and presentations to clients to get their approval.
