What does an associate industrial designer do?

An Associate Industrial Designer assists in creating and developing concepts for manufactured products, including the design of the product's appearance, functionality, and usability. They typically work under the supervision of senior designers and collaborate closely with engineers, marketers, and manufacturers. Their responsibilities may include sketching ideas, using CAD software to create models, selecting materials, and helping to prepare prototypes for testing. Associate Industrial Designers play an important role in ensuring products are both aesthetically pleasing and practical for users.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate industrial designer?

To thrive as an Associate Industrial Designer, you need a solid background in design principles, 3D modeling, and prototyping, typically supported by a degree in industrial design or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or Rhino), Adobe Creative Suite, and rapid prototyping tools is expected. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong teamwork and communication skills help you stand out in this role. These abilities are essential for effectively translating ideas into innovative, manufacturable products that meet both user needs and business goals.

How does an associate industrial designer typically collaborate with engineers and marketing teams during a product development cycle?

As an Associate Industrial Designer, you will frequently work alongside engineers to ensure that your design concepts are feasible for manufacturing and meet technical requirements. You'll also collaborate with marketing teams to align the product’s aesthetics and user experience with brand goals and customer expectations. Effective communication and adaptability are key, as you may need to iterate on designs based on feedback from both groups. This collaborative approach helps ensure that the final product is both visually appealing and functionally sound.

  • We're looking for an experienced, hands-on designer who can independently create complex 3D industrial layouts.
  • Create detailed 3D layouts for automotive paint shops and process manufacturing facilities using AutoCAD 3D.
  • Develop original layouts and drawings from project concepts, customer information, engineering requirements, and building documentation.
  • Create and assemble project coordination drawings supporting bidding, installation, and commissioning activities.
  • Use Navisworks to combine and coordinate 3D models and identify potential layout conflicts.
  • Lead layout and BIM coordination activities to support efficient, collision-free installation.
  • Develop and maintain process manufacturing layouts and facility-level building documentation.
  • Coordinate equipment placement, access requirements, clearances, and interfaces between building systems and paint finishing equipment.
  • Interpret mechanical drawings, schematics, equipment information, and customer documentation.
  • Participate in design reviews and resolve real or potential layout and design issues.
  • Coordinate with engineering, estimating, project management, contractors, suppliers, and customers.
  • Complete drawings and layout revisions according to agreed project schedules.
  • Maintain accurate drawing revisions, document distribution, and project design records.
  • Conduct field measurements and provide onsite design support when required.
  • Support project teams throughout design, installation, and commissioning.

Your Skills:
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Design, CAD, Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • 5-7 years of experience creating layouts for manufacturing facilities, industrial plants, or process manufacturing environments.
  • Advanced hands-on proficiency with AutoCAD 3D.
  • Experience using Navisworks for 3D model coordination and layout integration.
  • Demonstrated ability to create original drawings and layouts-not solely review, redline, or revise the work of others.
  • Experience developing process manufacturing layouts and building documentation.
  • Experience interpreting mechanical drawings, schematics, and equipment documentation.
  • Understanding of BIM coordination, equipment interfaces, spatial requirements, and multidisciplinary facility layouts.
  • Experience with MicroStation or Inventor may be considered when accompanied by strong industrial 3D layout experience.
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with internal teams, contractors, suppliers, and customers.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 20% based on project requirements.
