Hybrid Schedule Philosophy: As part of the Cooley culture, we recognize and appreciate the value of being together, in person, to build comradery with others in the office and to be a contributing member of the Cooley office. Position summary: Under the supervision of the Director of Marketing (Litigation), the Associate Director leads the marketing and client development activities for assigned practice group(s) within the assigned department of Business or Litigation. The primary goal is to drive revenue for the firm through brand building and cultivating client development as a thought leader in the design, implementation, and execution of campaigns, initiatives, and programs focused on client retention, growth, and new business opportunities. In this leadership role, the Associate Director will interact with practice group leaders and partners in devising marketing and client development programs in a manner consistent with the firm's overall strategy.

Additionally, a critical component of the Associate Director role is fostering a collaborative team dynamic by leading by example, mentorship, and positioning the team for success by instilling a service delivery excellence model. Work is defined by the strategies and goals of the Litigation department. Work is reviewed at milestones, or at completion. Assignments are broad in nature requiring originality and ingenuity. Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Position responsibilities:

Strategic planning and leadership:

  • In conjunction with the Director of Marketing - Litigation, assigned department and practice group leaders, develop and execute marketing and business development plans for assigned practice group(s)/industries/verticals, and individual partners within those groups
  • Act as a thought leader to practice group leadership and partners on marketing best practices to build brand, aid client development, and cultivate new business opportunities
  • Collaborate within and across marketing department, practice groups, and interested stakeholders on practice-specific strategies/tactics, initiatives, projects, and client development opportunities
  • Provide leadership of marketing budget for assigned practice group(s), guiding strategy in budget deployment to maximize brand and client development opportunities
  • Support lateral partner integration as the marketing liaison for all related marketing needs to accelerate onboarding and integration into the firm
  • Implement service excellence standards in the communications, interactions, and delivery of marketing support to the firm

Practice group marketing responsibilities:

  • Take ownership of all aspects of Litigation department marketing activities for assigned practice group(s)
  • Create annual budget and marketing plans in conjunction with Practice Group Leader(s) and manage both to achieve goals within budgetary guidelines
  • Lead assigned marketing staff to execute marketing plan priorities, projects, events, and respond to ad hoc requests
  • Develop leading marketing materials including qualifications, pitch deck, matter and experience lists, website content, and related materials
  • Oversee the execution of winning responses to formal RFP/RFIs in conjunction with firm's Pitch & Proposal team
  • Execute firm sponsored and industry participation events, sponsorships, client dinners, and related activities
  • Lead, in conjunction with relevant stakeholders, the strategy development and team members driving the execution of directory and awards submissions
  • Lead the development and execution of thought leadership in conjunction with marketing plan, including speaking engagements, webinars, blogs, whitepapers, and more
  • Monitor clients, industry trends, and business climate and champion initiatives to create institutional clients at the firm through cross-sell existing services, practice groups and offices
  • Collaborate with Communications in developing brand and marketing campaigns on identified topics, services, and offerings and response to requests for PR/Media requests
  • Act as an expert in and advocate for the use of the firm technologies, i.e., CRM, experience management databases, and firm proprietary databases, to support and advance client and business development opportunities

Management:

  • Provide leadership, guidance and mentoring to attorneys and staff through effective communication ensuring a well-informed and highly motivated team effort
  • Serve as mentor to indirect and direct reports
  • Provide day-to-day supervision of direct reports, ensure compliance with assigned work hours and monitor for compliance with all firm and department policies. Manage staffing coverage, review and process time logs/time off requests
  • Support business professional development and continued educational opportunities
  • In collaboration with immediate supervisor and HR, participate in hiring, performance appraisals, counseling, termination and other employee lifecycle events
  • All other duties as assigned or required

Skills and experience:

Required:

  • After orientation at Cooley LLP, exhibit proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, iManage and other firm applications
  • Ability to work extended and/or weekend hours, as required
  • Ability to travel, as required
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 8+ years direct applicable experience (e.g., sales and/or marketing-related roles) to include 4 years management experience (some at the senior level preferred) with experience leading others
  • Proficient in the use of CRM tools

Preferred:

  • Advanced degree in a related field and significant prior experience in sales and marketing organizations.
  • Prior experience in a professional services organization and/or law firm
  • Supervisory experience

The expected annual pay range for this position with a full-time schedule is $225,000 - $275,000. Please note that final offer amount will be dependent on geographic location, applicable experience and skillset of the candidate.
