DIRECTOR OF MARKETING

The mission of DISCOVERY Children’s Museum is to ignite a lifelong love of learning by fostering a welcoming, vibrant, and inclusive environment where all are invited to engage in playful and educational experiences.

DISCOVERY Children’s Museum offers visitors extraordinary learning experiences and enhanced school, public and extended programs; it is family-oriented and an energetic educational destination.

Position Description

To provide leadership and management for the direction, planning, and execution of marketing and public relations strategies, programs, events, and initiatives to expand the Museum’s audience and maximize revenue.  The Director of Marketing and Communications will execute tactical plans to promote the values and mission of the Museum and to position the Museum as a vibrant destination, a cultural hub for metropolitan Las Vegas, and as a leader in the children’s museum field. The Director of Marketing and Communications will serve as the primary liaison with Visitor Services, drive earned revenue functions, manage internal communications and brand standards, and directly coordinate with the Marketing Content Specialist.

Supervisor/Manager:

The Director of Marketing will report to the VP of Development and Marketing.

Job Responsibilities

Responsible for the leadership of the marketing department.

  • Work closely with the VP of Development and Marketing to implement short-term and long-term strategic goals for the Museum.
  • Coordinate with Marketing Content Specialist for all owned media; develop a culture of storytelling and promote a culture of membership and philanthropy. Ensure coordination of messaging across social media, website, and e-communications.
  • Develop, implement and manage marketing metrics to optimize media mix and track long term goals; report results on a regular basis.
  • Understand visitor profiles to reach core audience and identify strategies and market placement to reach new audiences; research and evaluate Museum’s online and offline audiences and refine marketing model; identify trends and forecast attendance.
  • Develop community-based programs and events to help broaden audience participation.
  • Coordinate with Marketing Content Specialist to create short-term marketing and public relations campaigns.
  • Manage Museum’s internal communications and coordinate with Marketing Content Specialist on graphic design for all promotional, collateral and advertising materials and publications; ensure alignment with brand standards and the promotion of a consistent organizational image.
  • Oversee marketing plans to promote all earned revenue streams, including admissions, group sales, museum rentals, DISCOVERY retail store sales and birthday experiences.
  • Plan and conduct media relations and as needed, related to crisis communications.
  • Foster external partnerships to broaden marketing committee representation, drive traffic and support the Museum’s community-based efforts.
  • Collaborate and consult with all Museum departments, external support organizations, and Marketing Committee to strengthen marketing and communication strategy and execution for their distinct audiences.
  • Collaborate with Development staff to develop in-kind promotional sponsorships for Museum exhibitions, programs, and activities.
  • Supervise marketing volunteers when applicable.
  • Maintain historic marketing records. 
  • Prepare reports for supervisor as needed.
  • Prepare monthly reports for the Marketing Committee and Board meetings in a timely manner.

Other Responsibilities

Supports overall functions of the museum.

  • Attends regularly scheduled meetings and as requested by supervisor;
  • Assists in the development of goals and objectives for both the department and the Museum and supports same;
  • Works well under supervision and with others in completing projects.

Maintains a high level of professionalism in performing assigned duties and responsibilities.

  • Adheres to ethical principles in all business dealings;
  • Establishes and adjusts priorities to maintain efficient workflow;
  • Meets deadlines;
  • Accepts directives with enthusiasm and commitment;
  • Supports the Corporate Mission and Corporate Vision and adheres to all work rules, policies, and procedures;
  • Maintains confidentiality of donor, prospect, vendor/supplier and other corporate records;
  • Maintains high professional visibility within the community as a representative of the Museum including serving as a member of the Speaker’s Bureau.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least five years of relevant work experience.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Strong knowledge of social media sites like Facebook, Twitter,Instagram
  • Strong organizational skills, planning skills, and initiative.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff members and general public.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules may include assignments outside of established office hours, such as weekends or holidays.
  • Ability to work independently required.
  • Physical activities required include and are not limited to visual acuity and hearing, clear communication of the English language, light and heavy lifting, typing, sitting, bending, walking and standing.

Salary:

$65,000 - $75,000 annual salary
