What Is an Associate Designer?

An associate designer is responsible for assisting the lead designer or art director with the production and design of creative projects. Associate designers can work in a variety of industries, include fashion, graphic design, and interior design. As an associate designer, your job duties vary significantly by industry, but they generally involve researching trends, communicating with clients, and procuring materials necessary for designing the project. Regarding academic qualifications, you need a bachelor’s degree in fine arts or a major related to the specific industry in which you choose to work. Some employers may require previous experience or a portfolio that proves your design skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Associate Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Designer, you generally need a strong foundation in design principles, proficiency with design software (such as Adobe Creative Suite), and a relevant degree or portfolio showcasing your work. Familiarity with tools like Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and sometimes prototyping platforms like Figma or Sketch is often required. Strong attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication skills help you excel in collaborative environments and respond to feedback. These skills ensure you can contribute high-quality, innovative designs that meet client or project objectives in a fast-paced industry.

How does an Associate Designer typically collaborate with other team members during a project?

Associate Designers work closely with senior designers, project managers, and cross-functional teams such as marketing, engineering, or product development. Collaboration often involves participating in brainstorming sessions, contributing design ideas, and iterating on feedback from multiple stakeholders. Regular communication—via meetings, design reviews, and digital collaboration tools—is essential to ensure that design concepts align with project goals and brand guidelines. This teamwork helps Associate Designers learn from experienced colleagues and refine their skills in a supportive environment.

What does an Associate Designer do?

An Associate Designer is an entry- to mid-level professional who assists in the creation and development of design projects. They typically work under the supervision of senior designers or art directors and contribute to tasks such as creating layouts, preparing design concepts, and revising drafts based on feedback. Their responsibilities can vary depending on the industry—such as fashion, graphic design, or interior design—but generally involve supporting the execution of visual or conceptual elements to meet project goals. Associate Designers collaborate with cross-functional teams and help ensure that design work aligns with brand or project standards.

Job description

We are a 1,000-piece puzzle. Each of us is essential, interconnected, and intentionally designed. Together we create something powerful: media that matters, growth that lasts, and a culture we are proud to build.
As part of our growth team, The Storytellers and Amplifiers shape how Attention Arc shows up in the world. Through thoughtful design, visual storytelling, and brand expression, this team helps connect our people, our work, and our values to the audiences who matter most.
This role plays an important part in bringing our brand to life across presentations, internal communications, marketing assets, and agency materials. It's an opportunity to grow alongside a developing brand, work closely with senior creative leadership, and contribute to the creative systems that support the future of Attention Arc.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
This is a foundational design role for someone excited to grow their craft in a fast-moving agency environment. You'll support presentation design, visual storytelling, and creative collateral across internal marketing, agency communications, and brand initiatives while learning directly from the Supervisor, Design.
This role is ideal for someone who is highly detail-oriented, visually thoughtful, curious about storytelling, and eager to build both technical and strategic design skills.
Key Responsibilities
Presentation Design & Visual Storytelling

  • Apply established visual systems and templates across presentations and marketing assets
  • Support the creation of executive-level presentations, internal communications, and agency storytelling materials
  • Design visually compelling presentations by adapting new content to existing brand templates
  • Translate complex information into clear, engaging, presentation-first storytelling
  • Partner with cross-functional teams including Strategy & Stewardship, Activation, Research, Data & Analytics, and Growth to bring ideas to life visually
Brand Stewardship & Creative Execution
  • Execute brand standards consistently across internal and external materials
  • Support the development of marketing assets including social content, internal communications, branded visuals, and agency materials
  • Maintain and organize design resources shared across the company (libraries, templates, asset folders)
  • Ensure all deliverables reflect a high standard of craft, polish, and attention to detail
Workflow & Collaboration
  • Collaborate closely with the Supervisor, Design to execute against established systems and design direction
  • Communicate proactively about project status, feedback, or roadblocks
  • Manage multiple assignments and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Contribute ideas, creative thinking, and curiosity to team discussions and brainstorms
  • Learn and grow through mentorship, feedback, and hands-on collaboration
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
Experience & Technical Expertise
  • Recent graduate or 0 to 1 year of professional design experience
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating visual storytelling, typography, layout, and attention to detail, and creative thinking
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud, particularly Illustrator
  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn chart and graph design/branding within Microsoft Excel and occasionally Google Sheets
  • Comfort working in collaborative presentation tools (PowerPoint, Google Slides, Google Workspace, Keynote or Figma)
  • Experience working within brand guidelines and design systems
  • Exposure to Figma or similar collaborative design platforms is a plus
  • Agency internship or agency experience is helpful but not required
Capabilities
  • Strong visual communication and storytelling instincts
  • Curiosity and willingness to experiment, learn, and improve
  • Highly organized with strong time management skills
  • Coachable mindset with openness to feedback and collaboration
  • Comfortable balancing multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Clear communicator who asks thoughtful questions and collaborates effectively
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality craft
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment
WHO YOU ARE
At Attention Arc, how you work is just as important as what you deliver. Our core competencies define the skills and behaviors that drive strong performance and meaningful impact:
  • Credibility - You care deeply about craft and detail, take pride in producing polished work, and approach challenges with curiosity and a willingness to learn.
  • Clarity - You organize ideas visually and verbally in ways that help people quickly understand information, stories, and next steps.
  • Connection - You collaborate openly across teams, communicate proactively, and contribute positively to shared outcomes without ego.
  • Care - You show accountability, professionalism, and respect in how you work with teammates and approach feedback.
  • Culture & Character - You're eager to grow, open to coaching, and excited to help shape a creative culture rooted in curiosity, collaboration, and intention.
Together, these behaviors define what it means to do great work here: building trust, driving impact, and creating a culture where people and ideas thrive.
WHO WE ARE
We're a media agency built for brands that value intention. At Attention Arc, we combine deliberate media craft with technology designed to amplify it. We build trusted partnerships so every decision stays aligned with what matters most. Media doesn't fail because of technology. It fails when intention is missing. That's why we exist.
To restore intention to media.
At 160 people across four offices in Phoenix, Durham, Irvington, and New York City, we occupy a deliberate sweet spot: big enough to handle major brands and complex business, nimble enough to actually move, make decisions, and drive impact. No unnecessary layers. No slow-moving bureaucracy. Just sharp thinking, fast execution, and tech-enabled.
Our culture is shaped by our values:
  • All In - we show up with intensity and ownership
  • No Sidelines - we collaborate without ego or boundaries
  • Move With Curiosity - we ask why, explore boldly, and learn fast
  • Truth With Heart - we communicate with honesty and empathy
OUR COMMITMENT TO INCLUSION
At Attention Arc, we believe people do their best work when they feel they belong. Inclusion isn't just about representation, it's about creating an environment where people feel seen, supported, and comfortable showing up as themselves.
We value different lived experiences and perspectives and actively create space for those voices to shape our work. We're committed to building an agency where everyone has a genuine seat at the table and is trusted to step in and contribute, fostering collaboration, encouraging curiosity, and creating opportunities for people to take ownership and make an impact.
Because when people feel heard, respected, and confident to step forward, we all move forward together.
WHAT WE OFFER
Compensation: The estimated range for this role is $55,000 to $70,000. Compensation packages are based on the skill level and experience each candidate brings to the role.
We're committed to rewarding our people fairly and supporting their growth with intention. Our salaries are competitive, thoughtfully benchmarked, and designed to ensure equity across roles, experience, and impact. Growth at Attention Arc isn't tied to a calendar, it's driven by performance, progress, and potential.
Here's what you can expect:
  • Flexible Paid Time Off
  • Comprehensive Medical, Dental, and Vision plans
  • Competitive Parental Leave
  • Hybrid work model with in-office collaboration
  • Mental health support
  • Annual agency contribution to 401(k)
  • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs)
  • Commuter benefits and corporate discounts
  • Carrot Fertility and family-building support
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Casual work environment, team building, and social events
LOCATION
We operate on a hybrid, in-office model designed to foster collaboration, mentorship, and hands-on learning. Employees are expected to work from the office three days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday).
Preferred office locations for this role:
  • Phoenix, Arizona
  • Irvington, New York
