Job description

Overview

PDO is an award-winning interior architecture and design firm with a full-time opportunity in our Phoenix-metro office for an energetic, driven and creative Project Designer. This individual should have excellent AutoCAD and Sketch Up skills and 3-5 years in the commercial interior design sector. In this position, you will collaborate with and be an integral part of the interior design team, supporting both development of interior design efforts and implementation of that vision.

Responsibilities / Tasks:

  • Be self-sufficient but communicate appropriately.

  • Streamline MAP function by who runs the meeting.

  • Create and use status reports.

  • Pinch hit when needed in all aspects of what we do; have a basic understanding of all software. Know what resources to tap in case of deadline. Move through the obstacles.

  • Begin LEED or WELL certification.

  • Become NCIDQ certified.

Marketing

  • Be the face of PDO, always be on to support the brand.

  • Learn to “grow” existing client base / business (people skills).

  • Be able to market independently.

  • Be able to complete applications for awards from start to finish.

  • Create, participate, contribute, and lead marketing presentations as needed. Be a significant contributor.

  • Be involved in at least one (1) business organization and hold a committee seat.

  • Continue to promote PDO and its talent to colleagues.

  • Create content for potential architectural partnerships: BDG, Justin

  • Be responsible for developing new leads; new business with Principal supervision.

Billing

  • Review all billings on projects you are responsible for.

  • Proposals with limited Principal supervision.

  • Respond to RFP’s from start to finish with minimal Principal supervision including be able to pinch hit on InDesign.

  • Helps support admin team in billing / collections. And knows when to hold back on work due to client not paying. Adjust workflow accordingly.

  • Has an understanding of overall profitability i.e. time spent vs. fees proposed. Job specific. Able to propose additional fees where appropriate to support the project. Has an awareness of when approaching overrunning on fees. Follows up on add services and gets that approved before doing the work.

  • Continue to facilitate and create proposals, review fees, push fees and push us to accept we deserve our fees.

Mentorship of Junior Staff

  • Delegating workload to Team for best profitability, deadlines, client satisfaction. Knowing the right team to assign.

  • Hold entire team (consultants etc.) accountable for deadlines and quality of work/accuracy.

  • Be a liaison between Principal and Junior staff.

  • Ensure the entire team is responding to requests within 24 hours.

  • Ensure the entire team is responding to emails same day even just to acknowledge receipt.

  • Overseeing construction documents and engineering drawings on projects they are responsible for. Catching mistakes, ensuring quality control, and PDO standards. Take the initiative to get involved. Ensure deadlines are met. Pinch hit to meet a deadline. Ensuring redlines are coordinated with appropriate consultants etc.

  • Perform and delegate / oversee construction administration for all projects they are managing as needed.

  • Grow younger designers to a senior level.

  • Maintain an active role in maintaining standardization.

  • Meet with Principal and/or Senior Design Team.

  • Meet with Senior Design Project Manager a minimum of once a week to coordinate projects, operations etc. Learn the schedules to ensure meetings are an efficient use of all parties’ time.

PDO Champion

  • Participate in developing the culture of PDO.

  • Be a leader in office activities.

  • Have an active role in creating education content and events for teams including presenting/guiding tutorials.

  • Celebrating people

  • Educate and exhibit the one team culture.

  • Update orientation and collaborate on Training Protocol

  • Get staff excited about what they do, build brand loyalty.

  • Be spontaneous with the staff and get them excited about what they do.

  • Motivate Junior Design staff.


Manage a minimum of 20 buildings where you are the main point of contact

  • Space planning major spaces (25,000+).

  • Running programming / visioning session for 25,000 plus projects; creating deliverable of these meetings.

  • Knows building codes in depth and is a resource to the Team.

  • Can perform area calculations with 100% accuracy.

  • Can perform BOMA calculations / standards by reviewing calculations by other entities.

  • Managing client expectations with consistency. Meeting deadlines, getting repeat work if applicable; keeping clients happy. Ensuring team members are responding, needs to be copied on projects they manage.

  • Continue to hone all responsibilities / skills. Lessons learned. Perform project recap on anything larger than 8,000 SF for lessons learned. Refinement checklist.

  • Perform and delegate / oversee construction administration for all projects they are managing as needed.

  • Project Management of multiple major projects or major accounts (minimum of 10 at one time). From start to finish involved in the success of the project; main point of contact for all correspondence; leading a team that responds, participate in the overall team management and have awareness of ALL projects on the team.

  • Can work with city contacts, contractors, architects, consultants and clients to creatively approach/address any project challenges/changes/development etc.

  • Be able to complete a full set of full-service construction documents.


Design Development

  • Bring ideas to the table. What could be done better, more efficiently, concepts for improving our level of service.

  • Responsible for significant contribution to concept development; bringing new materials / ideas to the table, stretching the design.
