Job description

Who We Are:
At OPENLANE we make wholesale easy so our customers can be more successful.
We’re a technology company building the world’s most advanced—and uncomplicated—digital marketplace for used vehicles.
We’re a data company helping customers buy and sell smarter with clear, actionable insights they can understand and use.
And we’re an innovation company accelerating the future of wholesale remarketing through curiosity, collaboration, and an entrepreneurial spirit.
Our Values:
Driven Waybuilders. We pursue challenges that inspire us to build, create, and innovate.
Relentless Curiosity. We seek to understand and improve our customers’ experience.
Smart Risk-Taking. We transform risk into progress through data, experience, and intuition.
Fearless Ownership. We deliver what we promise and learn along the way.

What We\'re Looking For:

We are looking for a Business Intelligence Engineer to drive marketplace efficiency and strategic growth in our OEM Private Label business. You will be responsible for identifying business opportunities, conducting research on market dynamics, and developing data-driven strategies to improve marketplace performance in collaboration with stakeholders. This role focuses on increasing buyer engagement and maximizing revenue yield through rigorous analysis and sustainable, insight-driven improvements.

As an independent and accountable individual contributor, you will act as a strategic partner to stakeholders, leveraging data to implement changes that directly impact conversion rates and business growth. You will bridge the gap between complex data sets and actionable business logic, ensuring that every insight leads to measurable, long-term results.

What You\'ll Do:
  • Marketplace Optimization: Improve OEM Private Label performance by identifying levers to increase conversion rates and buyer liquidity.

  • Growth & Yield: Analyze marketing effectiveness and pricing dynamics to drive revenue yield and sustainable growth.

  • Insight-Driven Execution: Transform raw data into strategic recommendations and secure stakeholder buy-in to implement operational changes.

You Are:

  • An Owner: You take full accountability for projects from discovery to implementation. You don\'t just "deliver a report"—you ensure the insight leads to a business result.

  • High Agency: You thrive with autonomy. You don’t wait for a brief; you identify gaps and opportunities and build the solution yourself.

  • Outcome-Oriented & Scrappy: You prioritize velocity over perfection. You are comfortable with messy data and can find the fastest path to "directionally correct" findings to keep the business moving, refining the details as you go.

  • Gritty: You have the intellectual stamina to tackle intricate, "hard" problems and see them through to a solution. You maintain a steady, analytical focus even when navigating deeply complex data landscapes or ambiguous business logic.

  • A Strategic Thinker: Passionate about leveraging data to not just report on the past, but to actively grow the business for the future.

You Will:

Own Strategic Growth & Market Impact

  • Drive Business Results: Assume personal accountability for key North Star metrics, including conversion rates, buyer engagement, and retention, using data to drive measurable improvements.

  • Marketplace & Pricing Strategy: Conduct thorough research on supply/demand dynamics and industry trends. Specifically, develop frameworks to solve for inventory pricing and perception gaps to identify emerging growth opportunities.

  • Forecasting & Experimentation: Model expected outcomes for growth initiatives and set measurable benchmarks for success. Design rigorous experiments to validate hypotheses, providing teams with the confidence to pivot or double-down.

Insights & Cross-Functional Partnerships

  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Collaborate independently with Product, Engineering, Marketing, and Program managers to align data infrastructure and BI tools with strategic business goals.

  • Actionable Reporting & Storytelling: Design and maintain automated dashboards and deep-dive analyses that translate complex marketplace trends into clear, actionable stories for leadership and sales teams.

  • Process Improvement: Identify operational inefficiencies and revenue leakage (e.g., "no-sales" due to pricing friction), recommending data-backed solutions to optimize marketing spend and operational costs.

Data Foundation & Engineering

  • Data Pipeline Ownership: Design, build, and maintain scalable ETL/ELT pipelines that transform raw marketplace logs into performant, "source of truth" data models.

  • Data Governance & Sustainability: Develop robust data models and ensure data integrity, fostering a culture of high-quality, sustainable reporting and experimentation.

Must Have\'s:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field (Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, Finance, or a related field)

  • 3-5+ years of experience in BI, data engineering, or related Analytics field, ideally within a two-sided marketplace (e-commerce, or auctions)

  • Advanced Degree is preferred

  • Technical Skills:
    • Advanced SQL: Expert-level proficiency in SQL with a demonstrated ability to synthesize and integrate disparate, large-scale datasets.

    • Data Modeling/ETL: Experience in data pipeline development, including extracting, transforming, and loading (ETL/ELT) data between cloud-based data warehouses (e.g. Snowflake) and BI platforms. Working experience in dbt (data build tool) or similar modular SQL frameworks is preferred.

    • Data Visualization & Storytelling: Expertise in translating complex data into intuitive, high-impact visualizations (e.g., DOMO, Tableau, Power BI).

    • Programming: Proficiency in Python (or R) for statistical modeling, automation, and data manipulation.

    • Experimentation: Strong grasp of statistical rigor, including A/B testing and causal inference to prove how specific levers directly cause changes in business metrics.

  • Business Mindset:
    • A "business-first" approach to data; ability to think like an owner and prioritize projects based on potential ROI (Effort vs Impact)

    • Proven track record of working independently to solve ambiguous problems and delivering results with minimal supervision.

    • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence stakeholders and drive consensus through data.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive pay

  • Medical, dental, and vision benefits with employer HSA contributions (US) and FSA options (US)

  • Immediately vested 401K (US) or RRSP (Canada) with company match

  • Paid Vacation, Personal, and Sick Time

  • Paid maternity and paternity leave (US)

  • Employer-paid short-term disability, long-term disability, life insurance, and AD&D (US)

  • Robust Employee Assistance Program

  • Employer paid Leap into Service Day to volunteer

  • Tuition Reimbursement for eligible programs

  • Opportunities to expand your skill set and share your knowledge across a publicly traded, global organization

  • Company culture of internal promotions, diverse career paths, and meaningful advancement
