What is an associate attorney?

An Associate Attorney is a licensed lawyer who works at a law firm and typically has less experience than partners or senior attorneys. Their responsibilities often include conducting legal research, drafting documents, meeting with clients, and assisting with case preparation. Associate Attorneys usually work under the supervision of more senior lawyers and are on a partnership track, meaning they may eventually be considered for partnership in the firm. Their role is crucial for supporting the firm's legal work and gaining experience in various areas of law.

What does an associate attorney do?

Associate attorneys are early career lawyers who work for law firms to gain experience and hone their skills after completing law school and passing the bar exam for their state. Under the guidance of an experienced attorney or a partner in the firm, associate attorneys assist with cases by conducting legal research and writing reports, legal briefs, and other documents. Associate attorneys also negotiate with colleagues from other law firms, participate in jury selection, and help argue cases in court.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an associate attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, a state bar license, and strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, document management systems, and e-discovery tools is typically required. Excellent communication, attention to detail, time management, and teamwork are vital soft skills for this role. These skills and qualifications ensure effective case preparation, compliance with legal standards, and successful collaboration with clients and colleagues.

What are some common challenges faced by associate attorneys in their first few years, and how can they overcome them?

Associate attorneys often encounter challenges such as managing a heavy workload, adapting to the fast-paced environment of a law firm, and learning to balance billable hour requirements with professional development. Building strong organizational and time-management skills is crucial to handle multiple cases and deadlines effectively. Additionally, seeking mentorship, actively communicating with senior attorneys, and asking for feedback can help associates navigate complex matters and grow professionally within the firm.

What is the difference between Associate Attorney vs Paralegal?

AspectAssociate AttorneyParalegal
Required CredentialsJuris Doctor (JD), licensed to practice lawAssociate's degree or paralegal certificate
Work EnvironmentLaw firms, corporate legal departments, government agenciesLaw firms, legal departments, courts
Job ResponsibilitiesLegal research, client counseling, drafting legal documents, court appearancesLegal research, document preparation, case organization, client communication

Associate Attorneys are licensed legal professionals who handle complex legal tasks and represent clients in court, while Paralegals support attorneys with research and document preparation without practicing law. Both roles are essential in legal settings, but Associate Attorneys have more advanced responsibilities and licensing requirements.

Job description

At The Nemecek Firm, we believe every person deserves skilled legal representation and to be treated with dignity throughout the immigration process.

We help individuals, families, and businesses throughout the United States and abroad navigate complex immigration matters. Our work includes removal defense, asylum, family immigration, employment immigration, naturalization, and corporate immigration compliance.

We are seeking a dedicated Associate Attorney to join our team. This position will focus primarily on immigration litigation, with opportunities to handle select criminal law matters. The attorney will represent clients in court proceedings, develop case strategies, prepare legal filings, and provide clear and thoughtful guidance throughout each matter. The ideal candidate is a strong advocate who can manage cases responsibly while working collaboratively with attorneys and other Firm associates.

WHAT YOUโ€™LL DO
  • Represent clients in immigration litigation matters, including removal defense, asylum claims, bond hearings, appeals, and related proceedings.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare motions, briefs, appeals, applications, and other filings in immigration and criminal matters.
  • Appear before immigration courts and other federal or state courts as required.
  • Regularly travel by car to courts and other legal proceedings as required by assigned cases.
  • Review case facts, identify legal issues, and develop effective case strategies.
  • Advise clients regarding their legal rights, available options, case strategy, and potential outcomes.
  • Prepare clients and witnesses for hearings, interviews, and other proceedings.
  • Manage an assigned caseload while meeting court deadlines, filing requirements, and client commitments.
  • Maintain complete and accurate case files, notes, deadlines, and documentation.
  • Communicate regularly with clients regarding case status, required information, and next steps.
  • Collaborate with senior attorneys, legal assistants, and other Firm associates to move cases forward effectively.
  • Handle select criminal law matters based on experience, qualifications, and Firm needs.
  • Protect confidential client information and maintain professional and ethical standards.
WHAT WILL SET YOU UP FOR SUCCESS
  • You are currently licensed and in good standing to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • You have strong legal research, writing, analysis, and oral advocacy skills.
  • You can manage multiple cases, competing priorities, court appearances, and strict deadlines in a fast paced environment.
  • You communicate complex legal information clearly and compassionately.
  • You exercise sound legal judgment and recognize when consultation or escalation is appropriate.
  • You are organized, detail oriented, and committed to maintaining complete and accurate case records.
  • You can work independently while collaborating effectively with attorneys and other Firm associates.
  • You are comfortable learning new systems and using technology responsibly while protecting confidential information.

Experience or a strong demonstrated interest in immigration law is preferred. Immigration litigation, courtroom, hearing, appellate, or criminal law experience is helpful but not required. Admission to practice law in Ohio is preferred but not required.

Candidates who are fluent in a language other than English will receive additional consideration, although foreign language fluency is not required.

COMPENSATION

The anticipated annual salary range for this position is $90,000 to $110,000 per year.

Starting pay will be determined based on the candidateโ€™s relevant experience, education, training, language proficiency, legal knowledge, licensure, and other job related qualifications.

LOCATION

This is a full time, in person position based in downtown Columbus, Ohio. The regular schedule is 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Court appearances, client needs, and filing deadlines may occasionally require work outside the regular schedule.

  • Dental insurance
  • Retirement savings plan with a 3% company match
  • Free parking
  • Onsite gym and cafeteria
