What are Assistant Systems Engineers?

Assistant Systems Engineers are entry-level professionals who support the design, implementation, and maintenance of an organization's computer systems and networks. They assist senior engineers in troubleshooting technical issues, configuring hardware and software, and ensuring system security and efficiency. This role is often a starting point for a career in systems engineering, providing hands-on experience with IT infrastructure and project management. Assistant Systems Engineers typically work as part of a larger IT team in industries such as technology, finance, or healthcare.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Assistant Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Systems Engineer, you generally need a background in computer science or engineering, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Familiarity with operating systems, scripting languages, and networking concepts, along with certifications like CompTIA Network+ or Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals, are typically valuable. Effective communication, teamwork, and adaptability are standout soft skills in this position. These skills and qualifications enable efficient system maintenance, troubleshooting, and collaboration, which are critical for minimizing downtime and supporting organizational IT needs.

Is systems engineer an entry level job?

A systems engineer role is typically not entry-level and usually requires several years of experience in areas such as systems design, networking, or software development. Entry-level positions in related fields may be available for those with relevant internships, certifications, or foundational technical skills, but more advanced responsibilities generally require prior work experience.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, petroleum engineering, and aerospace engineering can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and in high-demand industries. Executive or managerial engineering roles may also reach this level with bonuses and stock options.

What is an assistant system engineer?

An assistant systems engineer supports the design, implementation, and maintenance of computer systems and networks. They often work under the supervision of senior engineers, assisting with troubleshooting, system testing, and documentation, and may use tools like network analyzers and scripting languages. This role typically requires a foundational understanding of systems engineering principles and relevant certifications or training.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in fields such as software, petroleum, and aerospace engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, often through a combination of base salary, bonuses, and stock options. Achieving this level typically requires extensive experience, advanced skills, and sometimes leadership roles or specialized certifications.

What is the difference between Assistant Systems Engineer vs Systems Engineer?

AspectAssistant Systems EngineerSystems Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field; some certificationsBachelor's or higher; certifications like Cisco, Microsoft often preferred
Work EnvironmentSupportive, entry-level roles in IT teams, assisting with system maintenanceDesign, implement, and manage complex systems; more autonomous
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in tech, IT services, and engineering firmsUsed across industries for system design and management

The Assistant Systems Engineer typically supports senior staff, focusing on routine tasks and learning, while the Systems Engineer takes on more complex system design and management responsibilities. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds, but the Systems Engineer role demands more experience and technical expertise.

What are the common challenges faced by Assistant Systems Engineers in their first year, and how can they overcome them?

As an Assistant Systems Engineer, newcomers often face challenges such as adapting to complex technical environments, understanding legacy systems, and balancing multiple project deadlines. It can be overwhelming to quickly learn new tools and technologies while also meeting the expectations of senior engineers and project managers. Overcoming these challenges involves proactive communication, seeking mentorship from experienced team members, and dedicating time to hands-on practice and continuous learning. Being open to feedback and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams also helps build confidence and technical expertise.

Job description

Overview

Apogee has an exciting new opportunity for a Modernization Systems Engineerย for the Engineering, Professional, and Administrative Support Services (EPASS) Contract based out of Peterson SFB, in Colorado Springs, CO, supporting the Ground-Based Radar Digitization (GBRD) program.ย  The Ground-Based Radar Digitization (GBRD) program modernizes the legacy radar systems associated with the five Upgraded Early Warning Radars (UEWRs) and the Perimeter Acquisition Radar Attack Characterization System (PARCS), which provide continuous surveillance for missile and satellite detection, tracking, and reporting to support Missile Warning, Missile Defense, and Space Domain Awareness missions. This modernization effort replaces outdated analog and hardware-only components with advanced digital, scalable solutions that leverage a government-owned, open-architecture approach.ย  An additional program goal is to address existing cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the legacy systems by improving cybersecurity capabilities, to include threat detection and data protection.

This is a full-time position located at Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts.

Responsibilities
  • Provide systems engineering oversight across the entire technical baseline. Review and assess the prime contractor's systems engineering plans, processes, and artifacts to ensure they align with Government objectives and best practices.
  • Review and provide technical recommendations on the full set of contractor-developed system and subsystem requirements, ensuring they are clear, verifiable, and properly allocated and traced.
  • Oversee and assess contractor-led engineering trade studies, providing the Government with independent analysis of alternatives to ensure decisions balance performance, cost, schedule, and risk across the portfolio.
  • Manage and provide oversight of the requirements verification process. This includes reviewing and assessing the contractor's Verification and Validation (V&V) plans, Test and Evaluation Master Plan (TEMP), and the Requirements Verification Matrix (RVM).
  • Manage the Government's oversight of the deficiency reporting process. Track and report on the status of all identified system deficiencies, ensuring they are properly documented, prioritized, and driven to resolution by the contractor.
  • Evaluate the overall system architecture, including external and internal interfaces, to ensure it is robust, scalable, and compliant with Modular Open System Architecture (MOSA) principles.
  • Monitor system integration activities, identify potential cross-domain (hardware, software, cybersecurity) integration risks, and provide the Government with risk mitigation strategies.
  • Provide continuous technical support and recommendations to the Government team throughout all phases of the acquisition lifecycle, including major technical reviews (e.g., SRR, PDR, CDR), configuration management, and system-level testing.
  • Assist with Configuration Control Boards, Engineering Trades, Requirements Verification, Requirements Mapping, and all aspects of baseline management at all levels of the program to include the portfolio/system-of-systems level
