Job description

Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently recruiting for an Senior Electrical Power system Engineer to join our Conventional Energy Canada team in Calgary office.

Responsibilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of discipline engineering techniques, the design of engineered systems, engineering and design calculations.
  • Understands the standard engineering work planning, scheduling and cost estimating.
  • Perform engineering and design duties associated with project scope of work and liaise with other project discipline
  • Quality control of all deliverables within the scope of electrical engineering.
  • Execute engineering and design activities (Concept, Front End Engineering Development, Technical Study & Detailed Design)
  • Prepare and/or review electrical single line diagrams, wiring diagrams and schematics, Load list, Equipment list, Cable scheudles and all other Electrical delievrables assigned by lead.
  • Perform/review of electrical power systems studies and calculation, including Steady State and Dynamic simulations
  • Assist in preparing documents for grid connection permits, approvals, and liaising with utilities and regulatory agencies
  • Prepare/review of transmission and distribution system protective relay settings
  • Assist in preparation of technical specifications, preliminary and detailed design of balance of plant systems, and selection of appropriate materials and equipment
  • Analyze power system reports and provide technical recommendations for design reference.
  • Provide technical support to design team, as required.
  • Support in preparing detailed specifications and contract documents for procurement of major electrical equipment and construction document packages, and on-site supervision of installation
  • Assist in preparing drawing/document lists, with associated engineering budgets
  • Visit project sites for project related activities
Skills / Qualifications
  • Electrical Engineering degree with completed courses in power system analysis and electrical machines.
  • In-depth understanding in power system simulations, analysis and report preparation.
  • Understanding in performing different power system studies: short circuit, load flow, static and dynamic motor starting, protection coordination, arc flash, harmonic studies and grounding studies.
  • Understanding and experience in performing dynamic and transient stability studies is an advantage.
  • An understanding of the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) as well as TFO and DFO system in Alberta (and applicable utility in BC).
  • Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) with a minimum of 15 years experience in electrical MV/HV power system design, projects in HV transmission and substations and associated electrical equipment/components
  • Knowledge in IEEE/ANSI standards, Canadian Electrical Codes (CEC) and other relevant industry standards.
  • Knowledge in Alberta Electrical Utility Code and standards (and applicable code in BC). 
  • Experience in:
    • Power system analysis/calculations, including engineering software
    • Power equipment common to utility transmission systems and substations
    • Preparing drawing lists and budget hours
    • Grid interconnection technical requirements
    • Transmission and Distribution system code
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with clients and staff at all levels
  • Strong organizational, multi-tasking and coordination skills
