CREDENTIALS

  • Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED).
  • Valid Tennessee Driver's License required.
  • Minimum 3 years experience in facilities maintenance, construction, building systems, or related operations preferred.
  • Prior experience in a school district, public agency, or multi-site facility environment is beneficial.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:ย 

The Assistant Supervisor must have working knowledge of building systems such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, grounds, and general repairs.

Additional expectations include:

  • Ability to use technology systems for communication, documentation, work orders, scheduling, and reporting.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and commitment to accurate record keeping.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with school staff and maintenance personnel.
  • Ability to support training, motivate staff, and reinforce safety expectations.
  • Ability to follow and help enforce safety rules and district procedures.
  • Ability to work flexible and varied shifts as needed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be physically active throughout the day and able to perform tasks such as walking, climbing, stooping, reaching, grasping, pulling, and driving. Must be able to lift 50 pounds, tolerate chemicals associated with the job, and work in extreme weather conditions. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION:

Support & Leadership

  • Assist the Maintenance Supervisor in supervising, scheduling, and directing maintenance department employees.
  • Help assign daily, weekly, seasonal, and longterm work priorities.
  • Provide coaching, training, and feedback to staff to support performance, safety, and service quality.
  • Assist with orientation and ongoing training for maintenance personnel.

Facility Operations

  • Assist in overseeing maintenance, repair, and operational readiness of district buildings, grounds, equipment, and systems.
  • Support the implementation and monitoring of preventive maintenance programs.
  • Help ensure timely response to work orders and urgent maintenance needs.
  • Monitor building systems and report issues related to HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, lighting, flooring, doors, playground equipment, and grounds.

Inspection & Compliance

  • Assist with facility and grounds inspections to identify maintenance needs, safety concerns, and coderelated issues.
  • Support compliance with federal, state, and local requirements related to safety, environmental standards, fire and lifesafety systems, and accessibility.
  • Maintain or assist with documentation related to inspections, maintenance activities, safety training, and regulatory compliance.

Safety & Training

  • Reinforce safety procedures, including hazard communication, equipment safety, PPE use, and universal precautions.
  • Promote safe work practices and help ensure unsafe conditions are addressed promptly.
  • Maintain all required safety training certifications required by the job as assigned.

Project & Vendor Support

  • Assist with planning and monitoring facility improvement projects, renovations, and capital maintenance work.
  • Help develop specifications for materials, equipment, and contracted services.
  • Obtain quotes and support procurement processes.
  • Assist in supervising and inspecting work performed by contractors and vendors.
  • Verify completion of contracted work before recommending approval for payment.

Communication & Coordination

  • Maintain professional communication with vendors, contractors, school leaders, and district staff.
  • Serve as a secondary point of contact for school administrators regarding maintenance needs and project updates.
  • Communicate work status, timelines, emergencies, and unresolved concerns to the Maintenance Supervisor and other district leaders.
  • Prepare reports, schedules, and documentation as requested.
  • Assist with emergency response during weather events, utility disruptions, building system failures, and safety concerns.
  • Support district efforts for school openings, special events, summer projects, and emergency conditions.
  • Help ensure maintenance operations support the safe and efficient continuation of school and district activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor or Assistant Superintendent of School Operations.

Staff Relationship:ย Reports directly to the Maintenance Supervisor and supports the Assistant Superintendent of School Operations as needed.

Terms of Employment:ย Twelve (12) months, salary and benefits set annually by the Board of Education. Exempt.
