Job Description Summary:
Responsible for the overall management of personnel, operations, specimen analysis, quality controls, and instruments maintenance in a specific section (s) of the laboratory or affiliate hospital laboratory. Current license as Laboratory Supervisor (General or Special) by the State of Tennessee. Under the direct supervision of the Manager of Laboratory Operations; is responsible for the overall management of their assigned laboratory section. Incumbents are exempt employees and subject to call back by the department as designated by the hospital.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Reviews and evaluates quality control, patient data, and instrument maintenance for validity and completeness.
  • Prepares personnel/equipment budget and is responsible for scheduled hours and work assignments for section personnel; authorize overtime and time off.
  • Interviews applicants, trains new employees, evaluates work performance, and recommends promotion or dismissal of supervisor, assistant supervisor, and other section personnel; participates in department supervisory meetings.
  • Evaluates and recommends new procedures, reagents and instruments.
  • Coordinates implementation and writing of new procedures, installation of new instruments, and maintenance of current departmental policy and section procedure manuals.
  • Is responsible for the appropriate performance of intra and interdepartmental functions relevant to the section.
  • Insures that all requirements met for accreditation of all regulatory agencies.
  • Develop and maintain a positive work climate and the overall team effort of the department.
  • RCRA Hazardous Waste Management for Generators Certification will be provided to staff assigned to handle hazardous waste (alcohols, xylene, and stain) to the hazardous waste drum area on dock.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
  • Assess competency of each person performing patient testing to perform his/her assigned duties.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
  • Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science from a NACCLS approved program or equivalent.

LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:
  • MT/CLS (ASCP) or equivalent.
  • Current license as Laboratory Supervisor (General or Specialty) by the State of Tennessee.
  • Maintain State of TN licensure by completing education as required by State of not less than 12 CE hours annually.

EXPERIENCE:
  • General knowledge of laboratory procedures, both technical and clerical, specific knowledge of laboratory procedures in the discipline to which assigned and demonstrated ability to perform in a supervisory capacity as normally acquired through 5 years of medical laboratory experience as a technologist as required for licensure as a medical laboratory supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Special knowledge of hospital procedures and management training education.
  • Skills and proficiency in the principles, concepts and techniques of the practice of general laboratory medicine. Such proficiency is usually acquired through completion of a medical technology program in an ASCP accredited school or the equivalent. Knowledge of management skills usually acquired by completing a baccalaureate degree or the equivalent education and/or experience.

INTERPERSONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Good verbal skills and ability to communicate effectively with all levels of personnel and coordinate departmental group activities.
  • Works closely with other managers, supervisors to maintain uninterrupted service from the regular shift and to make maximum use of the department's physical and manpower resources.
  • Skills in supervision of personnel.
  • Ability to recommend policy and obtain and exchange information that may be of a sensitive or technical nature.
  • Contributes to a positive work environment and the overall team effort of the department.

DIRECTION/SUPERVISION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to manage supervisors and assistant supervisors, and medical technologists, medical laboratory technicians and support personnel in a specific laboratory section 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
