Job description

Calhoun Construction is seeking dynamic and ambitious individuals to lead, inspire and develop teams of dedicated professionals throughout all levels of our organization. Due to exciting growth, we are hiring a Safety Manager to help our teams maintain safe work environments. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Observe job performance and search for any possible site hazards to ensure that the company complies with all regulatory guidelines (OSHA, MSHA, EPA, etc.) and provide direction to management and employees for immediate actions if we are out of compliance
  • Identify conditions which could produce accidents and communicate to operations management so that conditions can be eliminated. Also communicate this information to peer Safety Coordinator so that information is shared between areas
  • Conduct post-accident investigations and make recommendations to prevent accident from reoccurring
  • Assist Safety Director on incident documentation
  • Communicate with injured employee and accompany the employee to initial and follow-up medical treatment to ensure that employee is taken care of and the physician understands employee’s duties and explanation of our light duty policy
  • Evaluates all safety and accident prevention educational requirements. Has obtained OSHA 30 hour training and kept current the OSHA 500 Construction Industry Outreach training certification.  Attends training sessions to enable training of specific safety topics such as Confined Space Entry, Respirators, Fall Protection, etc.
  • Plan, implement and coordinate programs to reduce or eliminate occupational injuries, illnesses or deaths and financial losses
  • Assist in development of Corporate and Division Standard Operating Procedures, policies and procedures for safety
  • Conduct training on safety, new employee orientation, as required
  • Visit each assigned work site at least once a week to conduct audits, as well as identifying any hazards or abating any unsafe behaviors or conditions in the work area
  • Visually inspect Calhoun vehicles/equipment for damage and road worthiness
  • Assist in pre-job/shutdown planning when possible with the Project Manager
  • Make personal contact with the working crews to build relationships, address concerns and identify improvement opportunities
  • Attend customer sponsored / mandated safety meetings
  • Counsel/coach employee when policy infractions are noted and inform appropriate supervision for additional counseling and possible disciplinary actions
  • Safety Managers have the authority to stop any hazardous work activities and to make necessary changes to ensure the safety of individuals
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 5 years of industrial construction experience or equivalent experience and training
  • Minimum of 5 years safety experience in an industrial construction setting 
  • Excellent computer skills, especially in the Microsoft Office Suite 
  • Safety Related Certification (Examples CSP, CHST, CET, STS, STSC, OHST, SMS, etc)
  • Confined Space Competent 
  • Aerial Lift Qualified Trainer 
  • Forklift Qualified Trainer 
  • Scaffold Competent 
  • Rigging & Signal Qualified 
  • Fall Protection Qualified Trainer 
  • NFPA 70-E Qualified Trainer 
  • Excavation Competent Trainer 
  • First Aid & CPR certified
