Job Summary

The Driver Helper works as part of a team alongside a Route Driver to assist in the safe and efficient collection of waste and/or recyclable materials from residential and commercial locations.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other related duties may be assigned.

  • Work in full compliance with Waste Management Safety and Life Critical Rules, OSHA regulations, and all local, state, and federal requirements.

  • Immediately report any unsafe conditions, service issues, or hazards to the Route Manager or Dispatch.

  • Attend and actively participate in all required training programs, safety briefings, and team meetings.

  • Manually or mechanically load and empty residential and/or commercial containers into the collection truck.

  • Assist with staging containers curbside, dockside, or in carryout/pullout situations to complete service.

  • Operate or assist with operating hoisting devices to lift and empty bins into the truck hopper.

  • Serve as a spotter and assist the driver during all backing maneuvers.

  • Notify the Route Manager of any incidents, accidents, injuries, or property damage.

  • Report service interruptions (e.g., closed roads, blocked access, overweight containers, or safety hazards) to the Route Manager or Dispatch.

  • Communicate customer requests or service concerns promptly to Dispatch or the Route Manager.

  • Perform all assigned duties as scheduled and assist other routes or drivers as directed to meet operational needs.


Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Less than 1 year of prior experience in the field.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Must be legally eligible to work in the United States.

  • Must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screen, physical, and background check (including employment and criminal history).

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Preferred:

  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).


Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Frequent use of motor coordination and dexterity (arms, hands, legs, and fingers).

  • Frequent lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, and twisting with objects over 25 lbs; must be able to lift up to 70 lbs.

  • Work performed outdoors and/or riding in a GPS- and video-monitored vehicle.

  • Frequent exposure to dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes, and other environmental conditions.

  • Physical demands may vary depending on site and route assignments.
