Job description

Segal McCambridge, a nationally recognized litigation firm, is seeking an experienced Legal Assistant to join our team in Roseland, New Jersey, supporting a busy and highly respected General Liability litigation practice.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced legal professional who enjoys working closely with attorneys, taking ownership of their responsibilities, and playing an integral role in the successful management of complex civil litigation matters. The position will be fully remote to start, offering the flexibility and convenience of working from home. As the team and role evolve, the successful candidate may be asked to work from Segal McCambridge's Roseland office approximately 12 days per week.

The ideal candidate is organized, proactive, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing competing priorities in a fast-paced litigation environment. You will work closely with attorneys and other legal professionals handling general liability matters in state and federal courts.

What You'll Do

  • Provide high-level legal and administrative support to a team of attorneys handling General Liability and civil defense litigation matters.
  • Support matters pending in state and federal courts.
  • Create, edit, format, proofread, and finalize correspondence, memoranda, pleadings, discovery, motions, briefs, and other legal documents.
  • Prepare and file legal documents with applicable state and federal courts and electronic filing systems.
  • Coordinate service of pleadings and other legal documents.
  • Communicate professionally with courts, opposing counsel, clients, vendors, and other outside contacts.
  • Maintain attorney calendars and coordinate court appearances, depositions, meetings, deadlines, and other case-related events.
  • Assist attorneys with case management and preparation for depositions, hearings, mediations, and trials.
  • Organize exhibits, coordinate witness schedules, and assist with trial-related documents and materials.
  • Open new files and maintain accurate electronic and paper files, including indexing and organization of original legal documents.
  • Process vendor invoices and prepare check requests and expense reimbursement forms.
  • Make travel arrangements and coordinate meetings, depositions, and other attorney commitments.
  • Enter attorney billable time accurately and promptly into the firm's timekeeping system.
  • Monitor deadlines and help ensure that case-related tasks are completed accurately and on time.
  • Work collaboratively with attorneys, legal assistants, paralegals, and other firm personnel.
  • Perform other administrative and case-support responsibilities as needed.

What We're Looking For

  • 2+ years of experience as a Legal Assistant, Legal Secretary, or similar role in a civil litigation environment.
  • Experience supporting attorneys handling General Liability, insurance defense, or other civil defense litigation is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with New Jersey/New York State and Federal court procedures and rules.
  • Experience with NJ ECourts and NYSCEF and other electronic court filing and service systems.
  • Strong knowledge of civil litigation procedures, court rules, and legal terminology.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple attorneys, cases, deadlines, and priorities.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, proofreading, and document-production skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Comfortable working independently and effectively in a remote work environment.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, take initiative, and anticipate attorney needs.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and handle sensitive information professionally.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative team.
  • A proactive, dependable approach and willingness to take ownership of assigned responsibilities.
