What is an assistant professor of practice?

An Assistant Professor of Practice is a faculty position at a college or university that emphasizes professional experience and practical skills over traditional academic research. Individuals in this role typically have significant real-world expertise in their field and are often responsible for teaching, mentoring, and developing curriculum that bridges theory and practice. Unlike tenure-track professors, Professors of Practice may have different expectations for research and service, focusing more on applied learning and industry engagement. This position is common in fields such as business, engineering, law, and the arts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant professor of practice?

To thrive as an Assistant Professor of Practice, you need subject matter expertise, a relevant advanced degree (often a master's or doctorate), and significant professional experience in your field. Familiarity with learning management systems (such as Canvas or Blackboard) and current industry-standard tools is typically required. Strong communication, mentorship, and collaboration skills help foster student engagement and effective teamwork with faculty. These abilities ensure high-quality, practical instruction and prepare students for real-world professional challenges.

How does an assistant professor of practice typically collaborate with industry partners or external organizations?

Assistant Professors of Practice often build partnerships with industry professionals to bring real-world experience into the classroom and enrich student learning. This can involve coordinating guest lectures, developing applied projects, or arranging internships.
