Job Summary/Basic Function
The Maintenance Assistant supports the Sheldon Swope Art Museum in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for visitors, staff, and the Museum's collection. Working under the direction of the Swope's Facilities Manager, the Maintenance Assistant performs routine cleaning and maintenance tasks throughout the Museum and assists with other facilities-related needs as assigned.
Specific Responsibilities
Work Schedule
Availability and Schedule (10-15 hours per week)
  • Weekdays, between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
  • Preferred schedule: Morning hours, particularly before the Museum opens to the public at noon.
  • Schedule and hours may vary based on the Museum's operational and maintenance needs.

Job Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities take place at the Swope Art Museum, 25 S 7th Street, and include:
  • Perform routine floor care, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and other floor-cleaning duties as needed.
  • Remove trash from Museum spaces and dispose of waste appropriately.
  • Manage recycling and ensure recyclable materials are properly collected and sorted.
  • Water and care for plants throughout the Museum as needed.
  • Assist with general cleaning and maintenance of Museum spaces.
  • Help maintain clean, orderly, and presentable public and staff areas.
  • Perform other cleaning and maintenance duties as assigned by the Facilities Manager.
  • Follow Museum procedures and safety guidelines while performing all duties.
  • Report maintenance concerns, safety issues, or needed repairs to the Facilities Manager.

The Maintenance Assistant is expected to be dependable, attentive to detail, and committed to maintaining a clean, safe, and professional Museum environment. The ability to work independently while following the direction of the Facilities Manager is important. Care should always be taken to protect the Museum's facilities, furnishings, and works of art while performing cleaning and maintenance duties.
